Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has revealed Craig Gordon is to visit a specialist over his troublesome knee injury.

The Scotland goalkeeper has been struggling with the problem since returning early from international duty last month.

Gordon was named on the bench for last weekend's defeat to Everton with Simon Mignolet drafted into the starting line-up.

Bruce has now decided to send Gordon to see a specialist in Sweden next Monday to try and get to the bottom of the problem.

"Craig Gordon is not 100 per cent fit, I have to report that. He's going to see a specialist on Monday," said Bruce.

"He came back from Scotland with a knee injury and it has been niggling away at him. He's away to see a specialist in Sweden on Monday and we will see how he is."

Bruce also revealed loan star Danny Welbeck has returned to training following his long-term knee injury and could be included in the squad for this weekend's trip to Arsenal.

Welbeck, who is on loan from Manchester United and Fraizer Campbell, who has also been a long-term absentee with a knee problem, are expected to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly next week as they step up their bids for fitness.

"Danny Welbeck is training today with Fraizer Campbell. Welbeck, if he comes through the next two days, could be involved on Saturday," added Bruce.

"We have got a game against West Ham on Tuesday here and I expect Fraizer and Danny both to be playing in that."

Good news to hear regarding welbeck and frazier just hope they aren't rushed back.

Great news about Welbeck and Campbell, I think Welbeck has been a huge miss.

Just another lad on the LT injury list, its good to see Welbeck coming back, it'd be nice to see another striker as well as Gyan upfront!

so welbeck could be available this weekend?? that's massive news if accurate, gordon will be a miss but i'd rather have mignolet in goal and welbeck up front with gyan than gordon and gyan on his lonesome.

that being said, if there's any doubt whatsoever about welbeck's fitness, he shouldn't play at all - we are away to arsenal, so it will be difficult anyway (not that i like having that kind of attitude, but maybe time to play the percentages and that), and then we have another 15 days off before a hot and cold liverpool at home. a fully fit campbell and welbeck could make all the difference there, as opposed to a half fit welbeck who we'd all be terrified would get another knock against arsenal away.

I think Welbeck might get a run out for maybe the last 20 mins against arsenal but as the article says both him and Frazier will be playing on tuesday in a friendly so hopefully there will be some news following that at how both are looking.
