I think even Guly would acknowledge he didn't have his best game against Pompey, but I thought it was a cheap shot to accuse him of generous defending, as said by presenter Jake Humphrey. When you guard a post area at a corner, you guard the post area. The first ball was initially won by Pompey's Thorne, despite plenty of defenders jumping for the ball, and then it went back across goal into an area where Guly could have just stayed at the post, because the ball was well enough away from him, for him to choose to do that. Instead, he belatedly elected to come to the ball. Too late, as it happened, and Ward got a free header. Yes, you can blame Guly. I blamed the defence as a whole, and Guly for his indecision only. Not the other cheap shot of saying he was 6'6" [Alan Shearer's measure] and basically not competing, because he was scared of the physical battle. Plus, Humphrey ought to keep his observations about professional football to himself, because he clearly didn't have any idea of what he was talking about. Thankfully, Claridge redressed a bit of the balance there. In all honesty, I didn't think I would end up respecting the much more even handed analysis of Steve Claridge, over the clearly contemptuous post match comments by Shearer, and the star-struck Jake.
Yes your beautifully worded pm's are being investigated by scotland yard as we speak ever since you sent me that one claiming you were going to rim me and I would enjoy it considering you had a tongue like a hummingbird's wing.
Pepys, you are 395 and 75 posts respectively into your Not606 membership. Would you like to stop your childish banter or take it to another forum, far away from here, where it would be appreciated..? I would suggest The Saints Web. They have a forum there just for you. Or keep it to PMs, at the very least.
Dear me. Simples folks. For those who keep on barking about 'Guly - What did he do? What does he contribute' every week there is a simple rule in football. SCORE MORE GOALS THAN THE OPPOSITION AND YOU GET 3 POINTS!!! So if 'X' player (lets take the unlikely Guly to fill X) does 2 things in a game and nothing else at all, and if those 2 things result in goals!!! Then he has made a HUGE contribution to the performance. So. Even if he only did 2 things and ermmm. Both were to score 2 goals then it's a very very foolish OP we have!!! If you don't feel foolish then you can join the band of people that agreed Le Tiss was a luxury player that was too lazy and not enough work rate to play for England. I seem to remember those same people saying there wasn't enough technique in the England Team at the same time. Can't have both!!! For me? I'll take 10 Guly's if those 10 Guly's contribute to more goals than the opposing team score. For every player like Guly in the league there is a player like Cork or Hammond or Chaplow etc to make up he difference. If all players put in a shift then there would be no players of their Ilk in football. Just 10 attackers and they would all put in a shift etc. BTW I honestly think Nigel got it totally wrong today. After that beautiful run of games where we failed to win and hardly scored he should have subbed Guly after the first and fined him a week's wages before replacing him with a hard working but non effective player that doesn't score. 3 points is disgraceful and embarrassing how dare Guly, How dare!!! End of Rant (although is the same rant over and over again
If he had not been in the right place at the right time it would've been 0-0. A certain Matthew Le Tissier used to often do nothing during games then score or make a couple of goals (admittedly they were special and often came out of nothing from Matty's brilliant skill) and he is a legend. One other thing what is Guly's actual playing position? Is he an out and out striker?
Scored the only and winning goal at home against Millwall. Scored the goal to put us 3-2 up against Coventry, and get us back in front in that one. Scored all the goals in yesterday's win. Just three examples of why without Guly, we would not be top of the league. Yes, he does seem slightly lazy at times and not the way we may want a player to perform, but with the numerous goals he has chipped in for us, he has so far been vital to our league position.
You are right in that he is invaluable to us but I disagree with you in that he is most definately not lazy. Check out Nigel's comments from yesterday when he said that Guly works very hard and brings something special to the team.
The beauty of football is that you can go from hero to zero, zero to hero in two games if you are good enough.
This thread is a joke. He scored twice and made some crucial blocks towards the end after he had moved wider. What more can he do
