I actually think it would be a good thing for the British armed forces to get involved. The West should do more in the field of state building both for international security reasons, and because it's the right thing to do. The people of Somalia deserve to be able live in a stable country and be able to enjoy their human rights, which I doubt would be the case if al-Shabaab gained power.

Then the people of Somalia need to make sure they have leaders that give them a stable country, it is not for the young men and women of this country to do that for them....just look at the kicking the septics got trying in on against Aidid

That country is a pit of snakes and should be kept clear of at all costs

The moan is that the British forces resources are stretched with us being in Afghanistan, on that basis alone what are the Government doing even considering the idea of going in there?

This sort of thing is always a difficult thing to judge, I certainly wouldn't advocate another long stay in a country where victory is impossible (it is much trickier to take a country by force and then give the power back to them that to take it for yourself, like colonial times). However, there are certain countries, especially in Africa that we owe a debt to. Look into the history of Somalia and wherever you see the roots to their current problems you will very close to it see the word 'Britain' (or Italy).

If we could help them gain some stability that would be no bad thing; however, foreign poilicy will always dictate that you do nothing without benefit. If we get involved its because we believe we have something to gain from it, whether we ever find out what it is or not.

This country owes no debts in Africa, these countries have been independent for years and the government and people of this country have given millions and millions in aid just to keep their warlords in power and luxury. When they stop giving refuge to pirates who plague the horn of Africa and stop the massacre of christians in their own borders then I might have some sympathy...

Agreed W-y As mentioned before the Yanks had a go at trying to help and look where that got them ! If the leaders of that country were about trying to help the country and not increase their own tribal strengths at the expense of others ,then I might be inclined to have a more liberal viewpoint !
Keep our people out of there!

You are correct, the leaders of these countries are exactly as described, leaving the people to suffer. I wholly disagree with the money that has been put into the continent with no way of directing where it goes, purely as a method of trying to ease the collective guilt of previous generations. Perhaps a slightly more constructive method could have been employed to prevent some of these problems. Nonetheless, nothing we can do now other than give military support and that would be both political and financial suicide.

Norway - I don't know why we don't do some sabre rattling back. Ban the same countries ships from docking in Britain would be a start - they can stick their beef where the sun doesn't shine.Scottish beef is 10 times better.

Solution to the african problem = disposal site for old nuclear warheads. What are the Argentinians doing, I've missed it, they're peaceful the problem down there is Chavez and behind the scenes he may try and provoke a conflict in return for finance, it was Ven who bankrolled their last attempt.

Was Somalia an Italian territory at some stage, why aren't they in there too? Or is it the new Europe?

    Germany - finace and industry
    Poland - workers
France - name calling and belligerency
    Spain - holiday destination
    Italy - ?
    Britain - fighting.

Zen - I think you have cracked it, let Somalia join the EU and the Euro zone - job done.

Aberdenn - Argentina and a couple of other countries down there have banned ships flying the Falklands flag from docking in their ports. Their fishing fleet and supplies boats used to dock in these ports to trade and get the boats maintained - well **** 'em, we should start a trade war with them all.
