Good Morning. Its Monday 22nd June, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Saints reject Leeds £20m bid for Shea Charles

Southampton have rejected Leeds United's opening bid of £20m for midfielder Shea Charles, with the Saints insisting their valuation of the Northern Ireland international is significantly higher than the offered amount. As reported by the Daily Mail's Simon Jones, Leeds United launched an opening bid £20 million to bring the 22-year-old midfielder to Elland Road. Unconfirmed reports suggest the offer was £15m cash, plus an extra £5m in add-ons. However, Southampton have made clear they will not entertain a deal at that price point.

Daily Echo's Alfie House has clarified that while formal negotiations are indeed underway, Southampton believe Charles's market value substantially exceeds Leeds initial offer. The Saints find themselves in a relatively strong negotiating position regarding the player's contract situation, contrary to initial assumptions that Charles was entering the final year of his deal, Southampton actually hold a one-year extension option, meaning he effectively has two years remaining on his contract.

Despite their firm stance on valuation, Southampton remain open to doing business should their asking price be met. Under manager Tonda Eckert, Charles faces fierce competition for starting minutes alongside Caspar Jander and Flynn Downes in the midfield engine room. From Charles's perspective, the move holds significant appeal. Reports indicate he is highly receptive to joining Leeds, as he is keen to establish himself in the top flight. Overnight, Jack Rosser of The Sun, has stated that a deal is thought to be close.

The situation remains ongoing, though Southampton must proceed cautiously. Following their play-off exit, the club find themselves not in a position of strength. While they may avoid the precarious situations Leeds faced during their Championship days when clubs exploited their second-tier status, Southampton still cannot afford to be overly particular, especially with the introduction of Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) and Sustainability and Systematic Resilience (SSR) financial regulations adding further spending constraints.

Wilson signature could be imminent

Leeds fans sent social media platform 'X' into meltdown over the weekend as speculation intensified that Welsh international Harry Wilson is on the brink of joining the Whites. The 29-year-old playmaker has reportedly become the subject of intense betting activity, with bookies suspending odds on his move to Elland Road on Friday following a dramatic surge in wagers. Reports now suggest Wilson boarded a private flight to Leeds yesterday afternoon, fuelling hopes among the fanbase that a deal is imminent.

Landing a player of Wilson's calibre on a free transfer would represent a remarkable piece of business for the club. The Welshman, who has demonstrated his creative prowess and set-piece ability throughout his career, would fill a significant void in Leeds's attacking midfield options. Supporters have not seen a playmaker of his quality since the beloved Pablo Hernandez departed Elland Road, and the prospect of Wilson pulling the strings in the final third has left fans dreaming of better days ahead.

Should the former Cardiff City and Liverpool academy product put pen to paper, the stadium will undoubtedly erupt with euphoria. For now, the Leeds faithful wait with bated breath, praying that their club can finally land the creative talisman they have so desperately craved.

Morning all

Wilson on a free is good business, nice competition too for Aaronson. Shea Charles feels a season too soon to be splashing £20m for a player that will probably not dislodge Ampadu and Stach, if he comes in we have to be looking to move on Gruev or Tanaka. I'll be happy though if we get both in and over the line in the next 8 days, some early business on the board, Ampadu signed a new contract, it looks good when we then start going for our next targets

Wilson probably had the best season of his career last season, hopefully that continues if he does sign for us.

If Charles is 3rd choice behind Downes and Jander, then he's not a chance in hell of getting in in front of Amps and Stach, in that case £20m is more than enough to be spending on a squad player, granted one with potential but thats all it is atm.

£20 to 30 million for Shea Charles is a no for me. Way too much. This goes back to my don't sign big sign smart. Wilson, after the season he's had, is the smart option. You don't need to throw cash around to make it big. You need to be smart to make it big.

And since our transfer budget is pretty tight this year, is spending £20 million+ on a back-up sensible ?

Surely Charles would only be back-up to Ampadu ? Or if Farke thinking he'd drop Stach ?

Saints demanding more is comical ... they may have an extension option, but if they don't sell Charles to a Prem club, he's going to be mega unhappy ... Saints not guaranteed promotion next season, and one of the weaker teams (Hull) have been replaced by Sham ... Leeds definitely shouldn't go higher, fk them, there are other talents to go find

Wilson on a free is good business, even though his wages will be hefty ... he's a genuine talent, only thing I didn't like about him last season was him drifting out of games and contributing fk all, almost as if he was bored ... it may be that he had enough of Fulham ... if he's pn it, like DCL was last season, he will be a superb player for Leeds ... throw in the Wales connection, he will have enough mates at Leeds to help him settle quickly

It's very encouraging to see Leeds trying to get business done early ... be great to have a settled squad ready to go for pre-season, let Sky try and big up Deadline Day the cnuts

To be honest if we get Wilson and Brandt on a free they’ll feel they can get in someone like Charles for 20m. Builds up the squad and I’d assume it means Longstaff or Gruev are on their way out, maybe even Tanaka. Thing is we have Stach and Ampadu but if one is injured I’m not sure Farke wants someone to step up & if both have another storming year and we don’t end up in Europe we need good players in the squad to fill those gaps. Plus if we want cup runs too. Need to have a good 25 man squad where we’re happy with any starting.

Longstaff should be a key player for us next season. His mid season injury really ruined his growing momentum.

Yeah, but it really is difficult to see how he fits in with a midfield containing Ampadu and Stach. The best he can achieve, IMO, is as an "impact player", thrown on for the last 10 minutes if/when we're losing by 1 or 2 goals.

Thats the thing isn’t it. I could see Longstaff wanting the move as I bet he expected he’d be starting for us. Gruev had an injury end of last season so he might be harder to move on. I’d say Tanaka is a slightly different player though so think we’ll keep him but again maybe want a move because of Stach & Ampadu being starters.

Yeah, Longstaff has effectively traded being a squad player at Newcastle to being a squad player at Leeds.

I'm pretty sure he won't be happy with his situation.

We should sell him.

Sell him and buy who? Someone that is happy to be a “squad player”? Personally, I want players that think and believe they should be in the 1st team. Both Ampadu & Stach will pick up injuries and I’d rather have someone come in that thinks if they play well they might stay in the team. Likewise with new signings, no point if they don’t have the confidence in their ability to make as a regular starter otherwise we’re not strengthening.

Yes, typically up-and-coming players, late teens-early 20's, who wouldn't expect to go straight into the 1st XI. But will, as you point out, expect to be used from the subs bench, get starts in cup matches and through rotation and act as cover for injuries/suspensions.

If we get him, I think Shea Charles would be just such a player, covering Ampadu and/or Stach.

No point in keeping unhappy players. Longstaff needs to be moved on IMO.

Longstaff will be a 1st team starter next season if he gets a full pre season unless we sign a player of Stachs ability.

I personally would focus on a 9, a 10 and a keeper. A left back to push Gudmundsson too.

Thought the owners said we will only be buying players for/ready to play in the 1st team? I’m happy with that, no one should be guaranteed a start if we want to progress.

Sorry, but I seriously doubt that. Longstaff can't play as a No 10 (at least not to Premiership standard) and there's no way he's getting past Stach or Ampadu. There is just no place for him in the 1st XI.
