Good Morning. It's Friday 19th June, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road
Leeds United appear to be closing in on Southampton midfield star Shea Charles, with the Whites firm favourites to secure the 22-year-old's signature ahead of reported interest from Manchester United and Everton. The potential £20m acquisition represents exactly what Daniel Farke looks for in a player, standing at 6 foot 2, Charles offers physicality, aerial dominance, and crucial versatility, capable of operating as a defensive midfielder, centre-back, or even full-back when required. That tactical flexibility makes him an ideal fit for Farke's system, where squad depth and positional adaptability often determine success over a gruelling and physical campaign.
However, the arrival of such a high-profile midfielder could have significant ramifications for Ao Tanaka, who endured a mixed season at top flight level. The Japanese international showed flashes of quality but struggled for consistency, and whispers from within the club suggest growing frustration at his limited starting opportunities. With Ethan Ampadu firmly established as the defensive midfield lynchpin, and Anton Stach making the central midfield berth his own, Tanaka already finds himself in the cusp of the starting line up.
What makes this situation particularly delicate is the positional overlap between the two players. Both Charles and Tanaka operate in similar hybrid defensive and box-to-box roles, meaning they would be competing directly for the same midfield slots. Unlike the likes of Ilia Gruev or Sean Longstaff, who are content rotating through the side, Tanaka wants regular starts, and at 27, he should be entering his peak years rather than warming the bench.
If Charles signs as anticipated, Leeds cannot justify a £20m investment on someone to sit idly on the substitutes' bench. He'd arrive expecting rotation starter minutes at minimum, leaving Tanaka facing even fewer opportunities than last season. For a player seeking guaranteed weekly football, this could be the catalyst that forces a difficult decision, one that could see an Elland Road favourite depart this summer.

Juventus relax demands on Leeds target
Italian media outlet Tutto Mercato reports that Serie A giants Juventus are actively seeking a way to part ways with Loïs Openda this summer, and have relaxed their demands significantly. What once was a season-long loan with an obligation to buy valued at £35.1 million has now been reduced to a straightforward loan with no purchase obligation, an apparent admission that the Belgian international simply does not fit in Turin!
When Juventus secured his signature last season, expectations were high. He was regarded as one of Europe's most clinical counter-attacking forwards, having consistently found the net during his prolific Bundesliga stint with RB Leipzig. His explosive pace, sharp movement in behind defenders, and instinctive finishing made him a nightmare for opposition backlines. However, his maiden season at the Allianz Stadium proved to be nothing short of a nightmare. The Belgian managed just a single goal in a Juventus shirt.
Many believe the answer lies entirely in a tactical mismatch. At Leipzig, Openda thrived in a system built around quick transitions and vertical attacks, exactly the environment in which his greatest strengths could flourish. He was fed through balls behind the defence, released into open space, and allowed to use his blistering pace to devastating effect. The German side's direct approach was perfectly tailored to his skill set. Juve, by contrast, operate in a far more structured and methodical manner. The Italian giants routinely face deep defensive blocks, leaving little room for the through balls and counter-attacking situations.
With less frequency of chances and minimal space to operate, the striker's involvement in games plummeted, and so too did his goal output. For Leeds, this represents a golden opportunity. The Whites have done their homework and remain firm favourites for his signature despite interest from major European sides. A loan move to Elland Road could allow Openda to rediscover his confidence and form in a league better suited to his attributes.
