From the Pinkun 'Scouting Report' on Bruno Alves:

"TACTICAL:

Alves operates as a left-sided central defender for Cruzeiro’s youth team. He is utilised as a ball-playing defender and offers variation in build-up through a mixture of long, diagonal switches of play and low-driven progressive passes into midfield. He can also operate as a right-sided centre-back and allows his team to play with a high line due to his strong recovery pace. The defender is extremely similar to current Norwich defender Jose Cordoba in the tactical flexibility that he offers his team. The Brazilian has often operated in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3, which will allow a smoother transition to Norwich.

TECHNICAL:

Alves is a modern-day ball-playing defender who focuses on advancing the ball forward. The 20-year-old is extremely two-footed, which allows different angles for passes into midfield and into wide areas. He often hits long passes to the right wing with excellent efficiency and technique. Alves is also able to drive the ball forward without passing, gaining territory on the opposition. He also possesses strong aerial ability, winning a plethora of aerial duels with a strong technique. Alves is effective in duels and has good timing, allowing for a formidable presence in the backline.

PHYSICAL:

Alves is a strong defender who uses his strength effectively to dominate strikers. He has a large physical frame for his age and will get even stronger over time. He is also a quick centre-back who will fit into the Norwich system effectively, as his pace will allow him to play in the high line. Alves’ physical attributes, matched with the similar intensity of Brazilian football in relation to England, should allow Alves to acclimatise to English football efficiently."

The scout is realistic about Alves's potential rather than present capabilities and there's also a considerable amount of adjustment to a new country, a new club and a new language to learn. It took Sara a considerable time to manage all of those, but he did.

"CONCLUSION:

Overall, I think this would be a brilliant signing from Norwich. Although the risk is there with Alves coming from South America without a minute of senior football, I think Alves has some brilliant attributes, and anyone consistently linked with Real Madrid must have some potential. City need a left-sided central defender to cover for Jose Cordoba as well as being a long-term successor, and Alves fits the bill.

TRANSFERMARKT VALUE:

£250K

EXPECTED PRICE:

£2.5M–£4M

SIGNING RATING:

8/10

ABILITY RATING:

  • Current: 5/10
  • Potential: 9/10"

Wow. Sounds phenomenal, but it has to transpire to Carrow Road grass.

Hopefully Cordoba will still be here so there would be less risk and Alves development can be managed without the pressure of having playing every single game and having to perform. This should help with settling in.

It's pretty sure that PC will be heavily involved in this and any other recruitment decision. Conner Southwell has been listening to Nils Koppen, who was PC's Technical Director at Rangers:

“You can call him in the evening and say, ‘Can you watch this player?’ and he’ll give you an answer. I worked at PSV, and it’s a big club, but coaches there wanted everything prepared. Philippe is a coach who puts in the hard work. He says, ‘Just give me the name of the player, I’ll do my own work, I’ll find out and give you my opinion.’ He will watch two, three, or even four hours of a player and come back with a good opinion. He doesn’t need a compilation of the best moments. He goes into detail by himself and will say, ‘I don’t like this and I do like that.’ It’s a very good way to work, and I think Ben will appreciate that. Koppen believes it is a sign of Clement's growing investment in the clubs he represents and his drive to succeed. It’s commitment. You’re invested in something and don’t want to be a passenger. Instead, you want to make something out of it. He’s not somebody who lets things pass by. He wants to be involved in every single bit, and if you want to get somewhere as a club, whether that's Norwich or another club, you have to do it together. He’s a good team worker, and I think that’s great.”

Pinkun says Alves deal poised for completion:

"Bruno Alves is in England to seal his season long loan to Norwich City – but reports in Brazil of a €6m (£5.1m) purchase clause are wide of the mark..The 20-year-old Cruzeiro centre back flew to the UK before the weekend, and was pictured at Colney on Friday night, to complete a medical and sign the paperwork on his Carrow Road move. City have negotiated a purchase option but the figure is believed to be in the region of €2m (£1.7m) for the highly-rated Brazil Under-20 international."

What moves, if any, will be announced today? Cristiano Ronaldo is too old so he won't be one.

From the Pinkun:

"Norwich City have confirmed the signing of Brazilian defender Bruno Alves on a loan-to-buy deal from Cruzeiro. Alves, 20, has become the Canaries' first addition of the summer window, joining on a season-long loan with a purchase option understood to be worth £1.7m (€2m) for the highly-rated Brazil youth international defender."

I'm glad to get Alves but, does this mean we are no longer interested in Luke Graham? Dundee are said to want significantly more than £2m.

The answer to that will rest with PC. Alves will be 21 in August, so he's not 'one for the future' as such, but he will need time to adjust to the culture, the team and the league. His age means that he won't take up a squad place this season or next, which is a big advantage and means Medić needn't move on to make room for him.

Rumour that we’ve agreed a deal to sign Sam Field permanently
Deal agreed for Norwich to sign Field from QPR westlondonsport.com/qpr/deal-agree…

Now confirmed by the Pinkun:

"Norwich City have agreed a permanent deal for QPR midfielder Sam Field. The experienced defensive midfielder spent the second half of the Championship campaign on loan at Carrow Road, making 15 appearances in all competitions and is now set to become a full-time member of Philippe Clement’s squad."

A fee of £1.5m quoted by the PinkUn rising to £2.8m if we achieve promotion. Seems a little high but as 1950 says a good experienced championship player.

Not like to be a regular started hopefully but can support McLean, Mattsson, Wright and Topic. Surely we now loan or sell Gibbs?

I wonder if his ability to deputise at LB was attractive. We might not want to go into the season with 3 dedicated LBs, but given injury issues in that part of the pitch, having Field who can deputise there means we don't need to pull players from other roles (e.g. McLean).

Solid pro, has a role in the squad and adds depth and experience. Not blown away by it but seems a sensible move.

£1.5m doesn't seem that much these days and if we gain promotion £2.8m isn't much either. PC knows him now and has hinted that rotation of players will be a regular feature. As DH says, his ability to play at LB is a bonus (he was rated at 7.2 when he played there). This suggests that PC is looking for a well drilled squad through pre-season and into a solid start rather than gambling on new players who have to adjust.
