Swap deal makes perfect sense in Shea Charles pursuit

Social media lit up yesterday with speculation that Leeds Utd are targeting Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, but are we being told the full story? Behind the headline lies a far more intriguing suggestion surrounding a potential swap deal that would benefit both clubs significantly.

The Saints are keen to land a proven goal scorer this summer, having lacked cutting edge in their promotion push last season. (Finn Azaz, their leading scorer last time out) managed just eleven goals; if they are serious about getting back to the top flight, they need firepower, and that's where Leeds can help! Daniel Farke wants to reinforce his midfield and possesses an established goal scorer at Championship level, that he is looking to move on.

Southampton have long admired Joel Piroe, with interest dating back to Russell Martin's tenure at St Mary's. His impressive haul of 19 goals during Leeds' title-winning 24/25 makes him an attractive proposition to any second tier club with ambitions of promotion. He could very well make the difference between reaching the play-offs or automatic promotion for Tonda Eckert's side next season. Meanwhile, Charles, strong and physical at 6' 2, and can operate in three or four positions would be right down Daniel Farke's street. The timing couldn't be better.

Southampton value Charles at around £30m, but given their current position, they can't afford to play hard-ball. Proven goal-scorers, even at Championship level don't grow on trees. Rangers, Middlesbrough, Stoke and Birmingham City are all interested in the Dutchman, which could give the Whites an advantage. Despite having just twelve months left on his contract, Leeds are still expecting a return of £12m-£15m. A swap deal, with Leeds shelling out £5m, would make perfect sense for all involved.

Financially, we are in a good place. Players like Charles IMO will only be sold if we get their market value (which to us is £30m).

I can see you selling us Piroe for £10m, so your net outlay on Charles is £20m.

No way will we get £30m for Charles. Closer to £15m imo.

Interesting speculation. Putting finances aside, swap deals rarely actually happen.

He wouldn't be the number 9 we need to replace Stewart but his record at this level is very good so it wouldn't be the worst idea. Perhaps he could play in that AM role?

He has 2 years left and I think we would get at least £10m+ next summer, so we shouldnt really consider anything less than £20m.

If we are only getting offers below £15m then we would be better off gambling on promotion and then selling for a few million less next year if it doesnt work out.

Maybe they don’t actually mean a “swap” but just us accepting an offer from them on the condition they accept ours. Deals will be kept separate for the accounting purposes

Piroe doesn’t seem to have the profile of striker we tend to use so there is a flaw there

Unless he pushes for it? Might also depend on what's happening with other players as we'll definitely need to raise funds this summer.

Yeah, if he really forces it then we might have to do something. But like you say, if someone comes in with £30m or something stupid for Jander, then we will be in a stronger position.

I do think at least one of Charles and Jander definitely goes.

Makes no sense for Saints. We would rather get as much money as we can for Charles for PSR or whatever it is now reasons.

73 goals in 179 games in the Championship is not too shabby and is getting on for 20 league goals every season.
I would prefer to lose Charles out of our CM options as we have Cam Bragg ready to play more minutes and weirdly Shea does not pair well with Flynn.
No way would it be a straight swap though but we could afford to lose some on Charles if it means we have first option on Piroe.
Maybe Piroe and £10m for Charles.

I dunno, isn't there an accounting trick you can do with swaps where you inflate the value of the players involved for accounting purposes? Sales show in full in this year's accounts while buys get spread over the contract length. So we do the deal. Saints get Piroe for Charles plus £10m on top. We say Charles is worth £60m and they say Piroe is worth £50m (obviously I've just made up those numbers).

Leeds can then claim £50m of transfer income for Piroe this year and spread the £60m cost of Charles over the length of whatever contract they give Charles. Say 4 years, so £15m a year. That means the deal shows as £35m of profit for them in this year's accounts even though they've actually paid us £10m overall.

Meanwhile Saints can claim £60m of transfer income for Charles this year and spread the £50m cost of Piroe over the length of his contract. 4 years would be £12.5m a year so the deal shows as £47.5m of profit for us this year even though we only received £10m.

You just know they’d dock us 10 points (and give Middlesbrough a free win) for that even though it’s what a bunch of clubs did a couple of years ago.

But jokes aside I assume something has been done about that technique since I’m sure it didn’t happen last summer.

Also the big interest in Piroe was when Leeds signed him from Swansea, and we had just appointed Martin at that point. Maybe we aren’t that interested any more now Martin has left.

Swap deals basically never happen so can’t really see it happening in the way outlined in that article

Don't think he's been that good since leaving Swansea. Certainly wasn't the year we beat Leeds in the playoffs.

Hard pass for me.
