What do we all remember about 1966?
How things have changed. You could buy a ticket at the ground in those days. I got one as a 16 yr old up from Suffolk, to watch the semi-finals v Portugal. Apart from our heroes Bobby Moore, Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Peters et al, I got to see the great Eusebio! I was surrounded by a crowd of Portueguese, all pleasant and not a hint of aggro. Never knew there was a memorial to Sir Alf Ramsey in the Ipswich Old Cemetary.

As always, England expects...

Not to make you all feel old but 1966 was the year my mum was born!

My earliest World Cup memory was 1998, when I would’ve been seven. I remember missing extra time and penalties for the Argentina quarter final, because it was way past my bed time! No smart phones or internet back then, so I had to go to bed imagining we’d won.

2002 was watching the defeat to Brazil in the school assembly early morning. I spent most the 2006 England games at my grandparents as my grandad is the football obsessive in the family (and still is at 97!) They had got new leather sofas and I still weirdly associate the smell of leather with that tournament.

And the last World Cup match was the defeat to France in the dead of winter. I watched it with mates outdoors at a pub in Needham, freezing my feet off as the outdoors gas heater had cut out moments after Harry Kane missed that penalty.

I like to think we’ll make another deep run in the tournament, but we’ll likely lose to the first top team we play again. Is it just me or does it feel hard to be excited for this tournament? Maybe it’s the expanded format, the grubby feeling with FIFA and Trump, and the late kick off times. At least this time I’ll be able to stay up and watch the entire game <laugh>

Tbh, I am not that excited either. The exhorbitant fees, tickets, commercially driven event set to make FIFA billions and of course the US politics, with that poor Somali ref being banned a Visa entry ffs!

My World Cup memories don’t stretch to 1966, as I was only born in December that year. My first actual memory was 1974. England weren’t in it, but I was 8 and school did a little project on it. Scotland were there though. 82 always sticks in my mind as we had a good start, but fizzled out a bit and eventually went home unbeaten. Quite a few Ipswich players at that tournament too. Not wildly excited about this World Cup, but guess it needs to get going. I hope we do well, but think there are genuinely better sides. Nice to reminisce though.

74 world cup was the first one is was aware of.
But the one memory that stands out is the 1990 world cup.
It was hearing the very first play of World In Motion by New Order on Radio 1.what a tune.
Mainly though as Sir Bobby was in charge.
