Which positions do we need to recruit?

I long ago lost count of the number of posts on here proclaiming Josh to be "the best striker in the Championship". In 2024--2025 he was good enough to be voted our Player of the Season and named in the EFL's Championship Team of the Season for that same year. We are yet to hear Josh's side of the transfer story. Irrespective of which, posters are queueing up to gloat at his missing out on the US squad for the World Cup. Sad.

Upon arrival in Toronto, Sargent was asked in February if he had a message for Norwich fans.

"I prefer not to talk about it right now, and if there's a correct time to kind of address them, I'll do that. But yeah, I prefer not to talk about it right now".

3 months on and he's offered no explanation nor apology for refusing to play, or take the steps necessary to return to the squad ahead of a transfer. Toronto has loads of sports media, heck his club itself is owned by a media giant (Rogers) and Players Tribune exists if he wanted to say something working with an independent journalist to get the wording right. If he had any interest in setting the record straight, he could have done. It's like Cantwell making vague promises about how hard done-by he was by the club, with zero substance ever revealed. If Sargent could genuinely defend his character and actions, or he had enough respect for the fans to apologise, we'd have heard it by now. The silence tells me neither of those are the case.

I don't wish him ill, in fact I'm delighted he's got what he wanted without any real negative impact on Norwich. But you can leave like Sara, Buendia, Aarons, Maddison, etc and I'll enjoy following their career and wish them every success. Or you can leave like Nunez, Sargent, Cantwell, and I'll enjoy a wry smile that the grass didn't turn out greener. In Sargent's case, I hope that choosing family over footballing success gives him what he wants in life, there's no shame in making that choice, only in his conduct in achieving it.

Excellent DH.

Just to underline the difference, here's Emi Buendia on his move to Villa:

“It wasn’t as dramatic a step up because I’d already had three incredible years at Norwich. We won the Championship twice, and also experienced relegation from the Premier League. By the time I joined Villa I already understood the rhythm and demands of English soccer."

Rumour on social media from a Brazilian source, now reported by the PinkUn, that we have signed a loan deal for 20 year old CB Bruno Alves from Cruzeiro. Hes left sided and yet to make a senior appearance for Cruzeiro, has been in the Brazil u20s.

Option to buy included in the deal.

Interesting that he is comfortable with either foot, a huge advantage for a CB. Sounds promising.

"Reports in Brazil suggest City have beaten Dynamo Kyiv and Vitoria de Guimaraes to the signing of the highly-rated defender, who has been consistently linked with Real Madrid throughout the last two seasons. The defender has elected to pick the Canaries over other sporting projects. Alves is yet to make a senior appearance for Cruzeiro, but has been a stand-out for their under-20s. He also has three caps for the Brazil U20s side. Despite being highly rated, former Brazil national team manager Tite, who was in charge at Cruzeiro until earlier this year, acknowledged the opportunity hadn't yet come for the young defender."

Yes I’ve seen a low quality highlight reel of him pinging diagonals off both his left and right foot, could be a real asset

The Pinkun have now confirmed it:

"Norwich City have struck a loan to buy agreement for young Cruzeiro defender Bruno Alves. The Brazilian youth international has been a key target for the Canaries as they seek to add depth to their defensive unit and it's understood they have agreed an initial loan deal with the option to buy the 20-year-old. Alves is now poised to complete the formalities ahead of being unveiled as their first addition of the summer as City aim to arm Philippe Clement with a strong squad ahead of the new Championship season."

It looks to be a clever way to strengthen the left side of defence without taking a squad place. He's also the captain of the U20 squad.

It will be interesting to see if PC can get a tune out of Topic , he looked decent but went to **** before getting injured under the previous Chump

According to the Pinkun:

"Following a loan spell at St Mary’s last season, where he featured once, the 32-year-old has now sealed a return to the Saints on a free transfer following the mutual termination of his contract at Carrow Road."

No mention of a fee, just the free transfer, but we might have paid a settlement fee to Long.

From the Pinkun 'Scouting Report' on Bruno Alves:

"TACTICAL:

Alves operates as a left-sided central defender for Cruzeiro’s youth team. He is utilised as a ball-playing defender and offers variation in build-up through a mixture of long, diagonal switches of play and low-driven progressive passes into midfield. He can also operate as a right-sided centre-back and allows his team to play with a high line due to his strong recovery pace. The defender is extremely similar to current Norwich defender Jose Cordoba in the tactical flexibility that he offers his team. The Brazilian has often operated in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3, which will allow a smoother transition to Norwich.

TECHNICAL:

Alves is a modern-day ball-playing defender who focuses on advancing the ball forward. The 20-year-old is extremely two-footed, which allows different angles for passes into midfield and into wide areas. He often hits long passes to the right wing with excellent efficiency and technique. Alves is also able to drive the ball forward without passing, gaining territory on the opposition. He also possesses strong aerial ability, winning a plethora of aerial duels with a strong technique. Alves is effective in duels and has good timing, allowing for a formidable presence in the backline.

PHYSICAL:

Alves is a strong defender who uses his strength effectively to dominate strikers. He has a large physical frame for his age and will get even stronger over time. He is also a quick centre-back who will fit into the Norwich system effectively, as his pace will allow him to play in the high line. Alves’ physical attributes, matched with the similar intensity of Brazilian football in relation to England, should allow Alves to acclimatise to English football efficiently."
