FIFA just announced a stadium ban on plastic water bottles, even empty ones for refilling. Claiming it's for player and fan 'safety', but at the same time not offering free water in stadiums despite the risk that stadium temperatures will be a significant risk.

But I'm sure that there will be plenty of water available...just in $5+ bottles on sale. Yet another FIFA grift!

...and by complete coincidence, Coca-Cola and Budweiser have announced a 25% increase on what they'll be charging inside the stadiums

74,000 tickets still available across 86 of the fixtures.

In part because of FIFA's ridiculous (and greedy) approach to ticketing, but also the inevitable result of expanding the tournament to 48 nations. There just aren't enough fans (and certainly not enough with the economic means to get there).

You could almost fit Curacao's entire population into one stadium ffs.

Damn you! Every time someone mentions Curacao, I feel the need to imbibe a cocktail made with Blue Curacao!

A piss poor friendly against a 3rd tier opposition which may have helped acclimatise the players, but otherwise did nothing to suggest that England are any better set for a successful campaign.
Salvaged by a Kane goal nicely assisted by Spence, who certainly improved his chances of featuring in the tournament.
The only positive spark provided by Ngumoha, who isn't even in the WC squad... <doh>

The first World Cup I remember watching was 1966. The 2nd was Mexico '70 with arguably the finest of football. I was spoilt!

74/78/82 all had their moments, as did 86 and 90.

But every WC since has been underwhelming and is now just ever-increasing exercise in corporate corruption. The latest being the pinnacle in that regard.

I'll no doubt still watch some games, but to say I'm looking forward to it would be an almighty exaggeration.

Whilst I have a vague recall of the 70 WC, 1974 is where I really started and that magnificent Dutch team of Cruyff, Neeskens etc

After that I have watched them all, and all of them are a mixture of good, bad and indifferent, 1990 is remembered by many through rose coloured glasses in respect of England, we were terrible in the group stages, got lucky when we scored a last minute winner v Belgium in a match where the Belgians outplayed us, Cameroon also gave us a fright until their ill discipline gave us 2 penalties then we turned up against the Germans and lost on pens.

But in all honesty watching England at the WC is seldom fun. 82 we were dull (after a great start), 86 terrible start was getting better until we came up agaist the hand of god, in a match that was actually very close, 90 (see above), 98 under Hoddle we were actually pretty good, possibly the most consistent performances in any WC since 66, once again Argentina were our undoing, but it was a great game that we could/should have won and 11 v 11 we might have done. 2002 Japan and Korea, this tournament has slipped my mind in the main, we got through the group but lost to Brazil in the qtrs once again a tight game where we lost to greater individual talent (and a Nayim moment from 'safe hands'). 06, struggled through the group lost on pens after Ronaldo conned te ref into sending off Rooney. 10 & 14 are best forgotten, well beaten by the Germans in SA, after the usual struggle to get out of the groups and we failed to get out of the group in Brazil. 2018 semi finalists taking advantage of a favourable run through the knock outs, but scored early in the semi final and failed to hang on. 2022 good group stages for a change, lost a tight quarter to the French.

Overall England highlights are thin on the ground, Platts goal v Belgium, group stage hat-tricks from Lineker and Kane, great goals by Beckham, Anderton, Joe Cole, and Rashford come to mind, but not much else.

This time I expect more of the same should get out of the group, but a last 16 match at the Azteca v Mexico would be a nightmare and would likely be the end of the road for this current team.
