It takes a particular brand of neanderthal low life to pull a stunt like that in front of a man and his loved ones...

Probably the type that frown and tut if someone drops the F bomb in front of their kids now...
When we won at Fulham with the late goal in the Prem as I walked out the ground a ‘local’ was giving it big about us dirty Northeners , I collared him and asked what the f*** he knew about where I’m from or anything related - it shut him up when I delivered facts .

I can’t be the only one who had no idea the Chelsea rent boys chant was particularly offensive, let alone illegal, until this thread/incident?

If it had started around me I would most likely have joined in and been absolutely non the wiser that I was doing anything wrong. The term rent boy is about on a par with calling a girl a tart.

Its not. Its been talked about for a long time - numerous articles about it over the years and fines handed out.

In 2022, the UK Crown Prosecution Service officially designated the chant as a homophobic slur. Singing it is a hate crime prosecuted under public order laws, so yes it is different.
I mean what the CPS defines has "hate speech" is irrelevant and even more so in this current climate, especially now with regards Henry Nowack. No different from the **** we get from them in droves, smack heads, dirty, skint etc etc. Gay people are absolutely sound and more than welcome at the footy for me.

Agreed. No problem with gay people watching football. Bi's I'm a bit suspicious of - greedy, indecisive or both, you decide. Straights - fair enough, but a lot need to sort their clobber out - some of us look like we've poured glue over ourselves and jumped into one of those salvation army clothing recycling bins.

I’ve never seen them or heard about it. It looks to be an illegal slur only in the context of a football chant, and only really talked about since about 2022. With the help of a bit of AI it seems tart is the perfect comparison too, both terms coined around exactly the same time for prostitutes from both genders. It’s about as soft and old fashioned an insult as you can get, and I would honestly say if you ask any non footballing person about it then they would laugh and say the worlds gone mad if you told them they’d get arrested for using it.

Yeah, I saw that backstory when I looked it up, although having been born after that era had absolutely no idea about that either, nor would I assume a lot of fans born after then. Or maybe I’ve just lived under a rock and everyone else knows all about it. Where has the education been about this as Chazz said the club told people not to sing it before the game I assume that was in the stadium? As it’s actually quite worrying I might have just joined in with that unwittingly and could well have found myself slapped with a conviction for a hate crime, a football banning order and all the baggage that comes with that sort of thing for something I had absolutely no idea about.

I’ll be honest, there’s been a lot of stories about it over the years.

Maybe as someone who has cringed a lot over the years when hearing it I’ve paid more attention to it, but I am surprised that people haven’t heard about it. It’s had a lot of publicity

Absolutely understand why the gay community would be upset about it and knowing the backstory the chant came from it’s difficult to argue it shouldn’t be banned, just making the point that a lot of people singing it probably don’t even know about any of that, and even 4 years after it’s been banned the news hasn’t go round to everyone yet, speculatively including those few arrested at city as otherwise why else would you in a modern stadium full of cameras where you couldn’t get away with anything?

I mean, a lot of people do stuff in front of known CCTV cameras that boggles my mind.

Eh, I do think its tricky. I largely agree it shouldn't be - but at the same time has it been illegal to be poor? People are directly killed for being LGBT still around the world - physically tormented etc.

But then on the other hand, political decisions have caused harm and probable death to people in poverty. I guess its the indirect v the direct that does make it slightly different - but equally less clean cut as there will be some that treat poverty chanting with distain but applaud political policy that harms people with little money.

Both things are gross to be fair. I wouldn't mind it if classist chants were treated the same way - but I do think there is a difference.

Yes it has been illegal to be poor, in the UK this is considered to have started in Tudor times and into Victorian. Vagrancy/begging was originally punished by whippings, stocks, enslavement but later was restricted more to imprisonment/fines. Even now some local authorities use civil injunctions and Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) to fine or penalize individuals for begging and sleeping rough. And obviously plenty of other countries have had laws and do even now.

As for what is direct or indirect and what that means. It may not be obvious that someone is poor, or even that someone is disabled, but it may equally not be obvious that someone is gay. I suppose it's considered a more singular identity to be gay and the others have a lot more variety? Even that is probably questionable actually. I think the main point is they have a group protecting their rights better than many others have.

Yep. Vagrancy laws have been on the books since at least the 1500s.
