I long ago lost count of the number of posts on here proclaiming Josh to be "the best striker in the Championship". In 2024--2025 he was good enough to be voted our Player of the Season and named in the EFL's Championship Team of the Season for that same year. We are yet to hear Josh's side of the transfer story. Irrespective of which, posters are queueing up to gloat at his missing out on the US squad for the World Cup. Sad.

Upon arrival in Toronto, Sargent was asked in February if he had a message for Norwich fans.

"I prefer not to talk about it right now, and if there's a correct time to kind of address them, I'll do that. But yeah, I prefer not to talk about it right now".

3 months on and he's offered no explanation nor apology for refusing to play, or take the steps necessary to return to the squad ahead of a transfer. Toronto has loads of sports media, heck his club itself is owned by a media giant (Rogers) and Players Tribune exists if he wanted to say something working with an independent journalist to get the wording right. If he had any interest in setting the record straight, he could have done. It's like Cantwell making vague promises about how hard done-by he was by the club, with zero substance ever revealed. If Sargent could genuinely defend his character and actions, or he had enough respect for the fans to apologise, we'd have heard it by now. The silence tells me neither of those are the case.

I don't wish him ill, in fact I'm delighted he's got what he wanted without any real negative impact on Norwich. But you can leave like Sara, Buendia, Aarons, Maddison, etc and I'll enjoy following their career and wish them every success. Or you can leave like Nunez, Sargent, Cantwell, and I'll enjoy a wry smile that the grass didn't turn out greener. In Sargent's case, I hope that choosing family over footballing success gives him what he wants in life, there's no shame in making that choice, only in his conduct in achieving it.

Excellent DH.

Just to underline the difference, here's Emi Buendia on his move to Villa:

“It wasn’t as dramatic a step up because I’d already had three incredible years at Norwich. We won the Championship twice, and also experienced relegation from the Premier League. By the time I joined Villa I already understood the rhythm and demands of English soccer."
