Agree to an extent, especially when you take into account that Hughes needs surgery for his hernia and Crooks needs surgery for his shoulder. I’m not too bothered as it’s the off-season and I did say when Coyle was spotted on the piss in Empress and Dirty Dicks that he could’ve waited until after the season. I won’t begrudge any of them a bit of fun in Vegas. That being said, I hope they don’t overdo it and aggravate any existing muscle injuries.

Yeah that's my main worry, is the players who didn't go in for surgery - Mo's another (although I know he won't be out drinking) could overdo it. As long as they come back in reasonable shape for pre-season I'm not too bothered. but hopefully after this week it's done and dusted.

They've earned the right - let them have a party - if it was in season then it would be ridiculous - it's 3 months away and many won't be here come the start of the season - go for it !!
They obviously love being together
Although I am sure they like their manager and owner it's best that they go without them

Just opinions, but I disagree. It's a short career that can hinge on one bad injury. One missed tackle can result in failure for the whole team. You don't usually see professional swimmers, cyclists or track athletes on the piss and they're paid far less, yet maintain a higher discipline. Drinking was tolerated in many team sports, but those days should be over. There's many years to drink in retirement.

Don't you? I'm sure in the off-season most athletes relax. As you say, it's a short career, you need to enjoy the highs when they come along.

Can’t begrudge them of going off the rails a little bit, it’s been a long hard season, they’ve all exceeding expectations massively. Go mad lads, blow off some steam. I’m sure when they come back or in another couple weeks or so they will get back into training or have there surgery and everything back to normal. They’ve earned this break a 1000x over, some of them may never experience another promotion or high as good as that play off win. If you can’t enjoy yourself after doing something as fantastic as this when can you? At the end of the day it’s still a bunch of 20 year olds (some 30) so they need to have a bit of a normal life every now and then.

I don't begrudge them enjoying the highs or relaxing. They make their own choices. It's a poor choice to drink excessively whilst an athlete.

I think it's very naive to think there's many sports let alone athletes in the world who don't celebrate particularly during the off-season.

I also think you're vastly over-stating the impact of drinking excessively other than the night before a match or directly after a match.

I'm sure some of them will return for pre-season to a rude awakening of the fitness standards required, but they'll have time to get up to those levels.

Blimey, we've seen a few videos of the lads with a drink in front of them and suddenly they're all on the piss 24/7 and falling about injuring themselves. As has been painstakingly pointed out they're all professional athletes, give them some credit to know how far to go.
Nobody has actually said that but if you want to attack a straw man, go for it.

Alcohol is objectively poisonous to humans so the ideal amount if you’re aiming for peak physical and mental health is precisely 0. Humans have been drinking alcohol in some form or other for thousands of years though so it’s just a personal choice of balancing the negative effects compared to the short-term buzz. There is no ‘healthy’ amount of alcohol though, just as there is no healthy amount of tobacco.

There's plenty of things that are objectively poisonous that in moderation are perfectly fine to deal with and process.

I also didn't suggest there was a healthy amount of alcohol, just that the recovery time needed to deal with ingesting it is afforded to the players.

Fatty foods, sugars, hell even just living in a city and ingesting fumes from cars aren't good for you either but human beings cope.

Heimdallr seems to be equating the two.

I'm with you that I want them to get back in one piece and the boys needing surgery get it but beyond that I'm not too fussed what they do this week.
I haven’t seem him say ‘they’re falling about injuring themselves’. He said it’s a poor choice to drink alcohol as an athlete. I actually agree with that. There is no healthy amount of alcohol for humans to drink, let alone humans whose careers depend on optimal physical fitness. But they’re adults and it’s their choice so I don’t really care unless it’s during the season itself and could impact performances and results.
