Just a bit of fun, and an expansion on the MOM thread which I think we'll all agree we love and massive props to Ernie for doing that week in week out! Also inspired by rewatching youtube highlights of what seems to be most of our games in the last few days and noticing/remembering things that I'd forgotten from the season so a few categories to consider beyond MOM for the season....Pierre's thoughts below!
Not606 Breakthrough player of the season
Winner; Giles
Hon mention(s) KJ and young Cathal McCarthy…..really tough one this but from absolute zero to hero for Giles this year…maybe I should have called this the redemption award, but can’t recall a turn around like it and wouldn’t have an issue with him being starting left back in most games next season. As for KJ, another who’s stock has risen massively since last summer and for McCarthy REALLY hope he gets a championship loan next year and plays 30+ games!
Not606 Clubman (unsung hero) of the season
Winner; Akintola
Hon mention(s) Coyle, he doesn’t half get some cop on here and in the stands, and I’ll stick my hand up I’ve laid in to him before but he does the off field job of captain very well and has helped to set the tone this year, as for Akintola his attitude this last 5 months has been incredible and I’m so happy he got to be on the pitch last weekend in full kit celebrating with the lads….plus scored the winner against the pigs
Not606 goal of the season
Winner; Destan vs Pompey (H)
Hon mention(s) Gelhardt at home to Pompey from Hughes’ ball over the top was VERY close (what a game that was btw!), Belloumi vs Millwall in the play offs and Slater’s thunderbastard against Swansea well worth a mention but I love a good team goal me and thought the move from back to front, down the right was beautiful, overlapping run good cross from Coyle, dummied at the front post and finished with aplomb. Chef’s kiss
Not606 signing of the season
Winner; Gelhardt on loan
Hon mention(s) McBurnie perhaps too obvious, and for the wage being reported on the other thread maybe should have expected that output! Joffy back on loan was massive, rewatching highlights he is involved in so many key moments throughout the season. Hat tip for Amir too, took a while but really grew into that CM position and think we were all gutted when he picked up a season ending injury
Not606 underappreciated moment of the season
Winner; Penalty at home to Norwich….we had a few times this season where we bounced back from conceding with a quick goal but that was in hindsight prob the biggest, we’d been under the cosh til then deservedly losing and it changed the whole day and outcome of the season
Hon mention(s) various players coming back from injury….Belloumi doing it 3 times, Yu not having surgery and setting up the promotion winner…..looking forward to seeing others’ choices in this category!
Not606 league match of the season
Winner; Southampton at home – battered them, they were fortunate to get one and to do that to a relegated team….I think that really set the tone for the season
Hon mention(s) every win felt massive this season….Derby at home tho, bagging 4 goals and getting back on track after a couple of losses was sweet
Not606 moment to forget of the season
Winner; Matazo going down with another ACL, absolutely gutted for the kid, heart breaking.
Hon mention(s) Brandon Williams in general – genuinely thought with the right support we had a prem level player on our books, wasn’t to be sadly…no idea where his career goes from here.....the 3-0 loss at home to Blackburn was horrific, watching that arse Cantwell celebrate RIGHT in front of us was galling…..refereeing performance away at Shef Utd and whatsapp blowing up with all my shef u supporting mates gloating wasn’t ideal, losing to Charlton to drop out the top 6..….will always be still not as many honking moments as last year
Not606 best away player at the MKM
Winner; Mentioned already….but bloody Cantwell..would not be upset if we nicked him of Blackburn as he was v good at their place too
Hon mention(s) Hackney when Boro pulled our pants down (lulled them into a false sense of security maybe) was another that was irritatingly good
Not606 best away fans
Winner; Portsmouth….1230 kick off away at the other end of the country? Fair play, they always make noise and travel in numbers
Hon mention(s) Preston I seem to recall being loud as well, weirdest tho were Norwich, travelled in huge numbers last game of the season and despite being on top most the game hardly made any noise…oddballs!
