Good Morning. It's Thursday 28th May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road
Leeds distribution dilemma
For the past ten years, Leeds United has struggled with an issue that has become increasingly critical in modern football: the goalkeeper position. While tactical evolution across Europe's top leagues has elevated the importance of ball-playing shot-stoppers capable of functioning as the first link in building attacks, Leeds has found themselves repeatedly let down by keepers who simply cannot deliver the ball with sufficient accuracy or composure.
The names form a frustrating catalogue of what might have been. Illan Meslier arrived with promise but seriously lacked consistency, both with his feet and his shot-stopping abilities. Kiko Casilla too was erratic, and panicked under pressure, content to thump the ball as far away from his penalty area as he could with little accuracy. Joel Robles, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Felix Wiedwald, and Lucas Perri were also poor with their distribution, giving the ball away far too many times compares to their opposite number.
Even Karl Darlow, who has shown more application than most during his tenure, posts statistics that tell their own story: a passing accuracy hovering around 58% and a long-pass completion rate of approximately 33% places him firmly in the bottom third of Premier League keepers when it comes to distribution metrics. Towards the end of the season, we saw Leeds attempt to build from the back, and let us be honest, the team simply was not there yet. The inability to progress the ball cleanly from defence puts more pressure on Leeds to find not just a quality shot-stopper but someone capable to act as the first line of attack.

Colossus Czech shot stopper on Leeds radar
SC Braga's towering shot-stopper Lukáš Horníček is the latest keeper to be linked with a move to Elland Road this summer. The 6ft 6in colossus has attracted significant attention following an outstanding campaign in Portuguese football, where he established himself as one of Liga Portugal's most reliable performers between the sticks. Horníček made 55 appearances across all competitions last time out for Braga, demonstrating remarkable consistency that has now put him on the radar of several Premier League clubs.
The former Czech Republic U21 international's numbers speak volumes about his effectiveness. In 33 league matches, Horníček conceded just 32 goals while keeping 12 clean sheets, meaning Braga conceded a goal every 93 minutes with their first-choice goalkeeper in net. His goals conceded average stood at a respectable 0.97 per 90 minutes, while his save percentage reached an impressive 69.16% after he stopped 74 of the 107 shots he faced throughout the league campaign. These statistics explain why clubs are circling the 23yo keeper, who appears ready to take the next step in his career.
Leeds' interest in Horníček comes as no surprise given their apparent intent to move on from Lucas Perri this summer. The Brazilian keeper, signed last year, is expected to be offloaded even if it means the club takes a financial hit on the deal. Last summer's recruitment drive proved largely successful for the Whites, with seven of their ten signings considered excellent additions to the squad. This track record gives the club confidence to take calculated risks in the market.
The links to Horníček join a growing list of goalkeepers linked to Elland Road, including Dmytro Riznyk of Shakhtar Donetsk, Brighton's Carl Rushworth, and Newcastle's Nick Pope. With so many options being monitored, it is clear that finding a new number one is a priority for Leeds United as they prepare for the upcoming season. His market valuation sits between €11.2 million and €15 million, so he is easily within Leeds grasps.
