I agree and said it a while back - Bentancur massively raises the technical level of that midfield, and is just so much more assured on the ball than the others. We saw it with Maddison too in the final third, when he came on in those games. Transformational.
I don’t get the extent of the Gallagher vitriol to be honest though. Is he long term what we need? No. Was he, indeed, exactly what we needed if we were only going to sign him in January as a senior player? Also at the time no. Ok, but his application can’t be doubted, his energy was foundational to a revitalised game approach under RDZ, and he scored a wonderful goal against Villa in a win that was a key part of the turnaround.
Given what’s been coming out about the lack of discipline and rule following from players (which Frank was unable to fix), the fitness issues in the squad that Tudor had to work to fix, and the need for a more urgent, proactive style of play to help the group (and the fans) feel like they actually could own their destiny instead of sleepwalking into disaster, you can just as easily make the argument that Gallagher’s qualities addressed all of those terminal concerns - he’s widely regarded as a top pro by every coach he’s had, and he runs himself into the ground. Maybe he was exactly what we needed in the moment we found ourselves in? You could see him throughout his entire run of minutes on the pitch under RDZ organising the other players to press, for example.
The truth is somewhere in between really, as ever. I’ve grown to like him as a player for his endeavour but I think RDZ has to find a way to not rely on him starting matches unless he can improve his technical game because that’s his major deficiency, and as RDZ wants us to become better on the ball (based on his interview today) that’s going to be the barrier for Gallagher and Spurs to overcome.
