… the extra games is just one reason
why I wouldn’t want us in the 2nd or 3rd tier of European football. Mickey Mouse competitions. Champions league is a different story but I’ve never watched a europa or conference league game and i wouldnt if we were in them. Pointless.

Conference league is equivalent of winning the FA Vase.

Funnily enough I was thinking of putting a cheeky bet on Leeds to be relegated next season…
Its not a personal tit for tat throw away statement. The xg table suggests that Sunderland should have been a bottom 4 team this season. Now that you qualified for Europe (and due to the strength of the PL, you'll probably get far in the Europa league), the extra games put extra pressure on the squad. A bad run of injuries, 2nd season syndrome and an overperforming squad (on paper) this year potentially sees you drop down the league next season.

Odds on a Sunderland relegation will be decent given Coventry, Hull and Ipswich came up and will be favourites to go down. Put that with an exceptional season for Sunderland.

I have decent history with this as I predicted Wolves, Forest and West Ham were most in danger this year out of the established PL clubs. Forest were my big tip to go down at 12/1. I cashed out for a profit a couple of months ago.

Depending on odds, I will have a look at Sunderland next season. I will also assess Leeds myself.

If either Leeds or Sunderland fans feel they’ve no chance of being in a relegation fight next season they’re in for a shock. I’d not expect either to be bottom three but if Ipswich get their act together they could get 39 points

Huge season coming up, don’t let this season give a false hope of security.

Glad we both bucked the trend and Sunderland far exceeded expectations, calling the Euro competition a Mickey Mouse cup does make it sound like we’re jealous, I’m envious we couldn’t finish higher but that distraction next season is a genuine welcomed miss

Maybe you guys feel you’re ready to challenge top 6 I haven’t seen enough of your games to confidently comment on that, I just know we’re not

Europa League is not the micky mouse cup, winning that gets you a champions league spot. It’s the Europa Conference League that is the Johnson Paint trophy of Europe.

Would I have liked to finish where Sunderland did? Yes it’s a great achievement, they’ve done great. But my comments about the European cups are genuine. Utterly pointless garbage in my view. Before the champions league the uefa and cup winners cups were great competitions in their own right. Champions league has rendered their replacements worthless and tinpot. Just my opinion. Couldn’t care less if we won one… and certainly don’t want the distraction of being in one.

I wasn’t doubting your prediction just to be clear, I was just sharing my thoughts on a possible relegation threatened team next season. I do also think Sunderland will likely be mid table at best next year.

Even if we go down next season, what we achieved this season will live in my memory, my father’s memory, and my kid’s memory forever.

It’s the first time in 50+ years we’ve qualified for Europe. We aren’t one of these teams who have the luxury of picking and choosing when we can qualify for a European competition. We saw a chance this year and bloody well took it.

I think Coventry & Hull are two that will definitely struggle next year. Ipswich are the ones who may give it more of a fight.

Bournemouth could be a possibility too looking at Europe and losing Iraola.

I think it’s the worst 3 promoted teams in a long time. Which should cut some Slack for likes of us and Sunderland to have poor seasons, if heaven forbid that happens.

My best mate is a mackem. I’m genuinely chuffed for you guys. De Bris is my manager of the season and seems a great guy. Hope you consolidate. From these eyes it did look like a lot of things went your way this year. It’s such fine margins. Mid table and relegation is sometimes only really 3 or 4 tight games that go the other way… which is why we were struggling. Our luck turned in the last couple of months far more than performances did.

maybe make it a double while your there Leeds and Sunderland to go down.
I'm having a cheeky bet on Hull to get over 100 points and winning the league.

well its over and we went out in a blaze of....... pizzz.
awful game to watch we started ok had a few chances middle to end of 1st half but 2nd half we were well and truly on that beach with a drink.
Time for a little break and ooot the deadwood and plan ahead still a few places in that squad to fill and still a few faces to move on asap.
Let's not wait and dilly dally we have to learn from past season's no time for loyalty to certain players it's a business and we still have quite a bit to grow.
We are in that position of being the ace card rather than a player wanting to leave holding it.
It's not nice but the club is bigger than any player let's do it and get it right.

I heard that the replacement of PSR, where it's based on turnover, means that if you're in Europe the margins are tighter. Aski will have all the proper info but it's 70% vs 85% of turnover that you can spend.
I think the teams with lower turnovers will also find it tougher next year.
Sorry to be vague but it's from memory.
Being in Europe is a factor. Forest, Palace and Spurs have all struggled this year, admittedly heavily influenced by injuries, but I'm sure its had an impact.

How does SCR align with UEFA’s financial regulations?

UEFA’s Squad Cost Ratio limits a club’s on-pitch spending to a maximum of 70% of its total revenue. All Premier League clubs in European competitions will still have to adhere to this limit, while clubs not competing in Europe will have a higher threshold of 85%. This is to allow clubs that do not regularly participate in European competitions to have sufficient headroom to compete for qualification for UEFA Club Competitions against incumbents who receive additional European revenues.

The additional 15% also helps support transition for clubs who fail to qualify in any given year for a UEFA Club Competition. This reduces the need for a club to take short-term cost action and allows a club to plan and invest over multiple seasons without being forced into sudden, destabilising cuts.

Here it is

I am happy Sunderland had the season they had. Good club. Decent fans and you've had plenty of hard times so you lot deserve a few good seasons.
