Tonda's future at the club

Right now i'm feeling worse than I did at the end of last season and that is all down to the actions of Tonda.
It feels like a kick in the guts after the feelgood run since January and now I just feel complete disillusionment with the club.
I just want to feel pride in my club and I have strong opinions about cheating in sport especially if it is systemic.
The stories coming out about dressing as Eastleigh FC staff to spy on Ipswich and memes joking about the practise are outrageous and we need a complete reset with the management on the football side of the club imo.

Absolutely. For me he needs to fall on his sword. There is no excuse. If he claims he didn't know the rules this would be literally incredible, and in any case ignorance of the law is no defence.

On a purely logistical level, can you see players trusting him in future? If he were to offer his apologies and resign he would regain some of the respect I held for him.

Should be be the lone casualty of this? No, of course not.

As for the punishment, of course it is absurdly disproportionate. I love the precedent. If any EFL club is stupid enough to try this I expect a £200m fine and points deduction at least.

Kangaroos and courts spring to mind

As a Saints supporter, I am currently being thought of by some, as the lowest form of life that walked on the planet and a cheat, yet I haven't done anything other than wanting the football Club that I support to succeed. The fact that success was achieved by unfair methods, means that we all tarred with the same brush and punished. The ones that did the dirty on us, are the ones that should be punished, but I doubt if any sentence will match the crime. The ones that dished out the punishment have absolutely no interest in the fact that we don't deserve it.

Why me?:headbang::emoticon-0183-swear:angry:

This. We, the fans, will be perceived as guilty by association. I`m a competitive runner, and I`d rather finish last than take an unfair advantage over anyone else. But what really saddens me is this - if we live to be 80, we`ll have lived for around 30k days. Ballpark the same as the capacity of SMS. So around one Saints fan will pass away every day - so before the start of next season there will be around 60 of our number who will have passed, and will have gone through thick and thin with Saints over decades, and who`s last experience of Saints will be the shame and humiliation of this debacle. That`s so sad.

As bad as we are all feeling right now, I honestly think the club can repair this but... the ONLY way to do that, for me, is to sack every single person that was involved and start afresh. If that means playing league 1 football for a season or 2, I'd be happy with that. We've come up from there before, we can do it again.

The flip side of that is that most reasonable people will know it's not our fault. I've had texts from fans of other clubs sending me condolences. Even had one from... wait for it... a Pompey fan!!

He's going to banned regardless so out of our hands anyway.

But ignoring it he's caused huge embarrassment to the club and cost the owner a **** load of money.
Did Bielsa get banned? Why would Tonda get banned?

I'd like to ask you both and anyone else who is feeling shame and humiliation over this, would you feel the same if this had been discovered next season? Maybe after we had achieved promotion?

The reason I am asking this is because I believe that you have been sucked into the media storm orchestrated by Steve Gibson.

Bielsa & Leeds faced nowhere near the assault from all angles that we have faced for the same offense. It blew over in pretty quick time and as far as I'm aware very little has been made of it since. Dirty Leeds maybe but not Cheating Leeds. These issues are as big or as small as the media decides and with Gibson's mates at full throttle, a fairly small example of cheating has been made out to be one of the worst sporting scandals of all time. It really isn't. We have no excuse for the offense but IMO, Gibson has manipulated an almost hysterical response from the media and fans of other clubs.
The outcome of the hearing stinks, the old boys network within the football governing bodies has delivered exactly what Gibson was asking for, what a coincidence. So, although I am angry with Saints for putting the club at risk of this happening, my greatest anger is aimed at Gibson and his mates in the EFL. They've used our foolishness to enable them to cheat on a far bigger scale than we ever have. The real shame is with them, not you, me or other Saints supporters.

Going back to how some have made comments such as (paraphrasing) "I'm ashamed to be associated with the club I've supported for 50 years".
I would suggest a bigger scandal has hung over Saints for a lot longer. Bob Higgins sexually abused young boys over a 14 year period, his behaviour was known within the club who turned a blind eye. In the wake of his conviction Saints were found to be complicit in allowing it to continue.
The point I'm making is this; that was a far worse scandal than spying on the opposition, yet fans didn't feel so bad about the club then because the media didn't drive an agenda. It got some coverage for a few days, no-one said they were ashamed and humiliated
and that they wouldn't be renewing their ST's.
You could say that it happened a long time before it became public knowledge and that is why I asked would you still feel ashamed if you didn't find out (about our cheating) until next season? IMO no fans needed to be ashamed about the Bob Higgins scandal then or a much smaller issue now.

So to repeat myself, this spying is a relatively small offense that has been blown out of all proportion by the media and the EFL with an ulterior motive. It is certainly not the crime of the century to burden us for the rest of our lives.

I'm not sure it's true that nobody said they were ashamed when the Higgins stuff came out. I seem to remember a fair amount of people saying that.

I agree with your general point that people are being melodramatic talking about 'darkest day' etc though.

It was a shameful period in the club's history and I also think people said as much. But I don't recall so much heart-searching going on as there is now for something far less serious.
I think people have been emotionally overwhelmed by the barrage of abuse and the outcome. (understandably)

Yeah I added an edit saying I agreed with your general point.

Rule 127 a unique cobbled up Regulation that has no Precedence and is in no other Football League Rule Book in the World, just the EFL and we breached it. The first time that it has been used since it was made up as result of a one off situation. Isn't it strange that no one has spied on another team since 2019? What an honest lot we are.

Great post. Really puts the latest episode into some kind of perspective

Thanks Tonda and SFC, I was hoping to bring my young daughter up to support Saints and have been slowly introducing her to SMS. Now I have to explain that the club I have supported for 40 years have been cheating to win, which is against everything I have attempted to teach her, fair play, honesty and sportsmanship.
What you may have thought was "gamesmanship" has had an undoubted effect on future support for the club I used to love.
A longer version of this has been forwarded to the club.

Like a geek, and a few others on here, I read the EFL report cover to cover… I wasn’t sure it could get worse for us, bad sadly it has.

My one fleeting hope was that Tonda wasn’t in on it and would survive to lead us like a phoenix from the ashes of this latest sh*tshow…. Sadly, more like a moth, he drew us closer to the flame… quite a few times.

He should be sacked immediately, along with probably most of the coaching staff that knew.

The FA are involved and he’ll be banned in due course along with others involved.

I fear for the next 6 months and the next few years; we’re potentially the next Leicester.

Kind of gone off football in the last few days… cba to watch the men flounder at the WC…. Think I need some time away from the “beautiful” game.

The one way the club could salvage anything from this is if they act swiftly by sacking all those involved, throw an absolute and genuine lifeline to William Salt and his family by supporting them through this time, and that they ensure no staff at the club or foundation suffer job losses as a direct result of this sorry saga….

Those are good values to teach your daughter tim and I honestly admire parents who see those values as desirable in their kids. But I have to ask you, why are you taking her to watch football? She is going to learn nothing of the values you mention at a football match wherever it's played. What Saints have done is different, I'll give you that but it's just another form of cheating that goes on in every match. We all know that when we go but decide to overlook it because watching a live match is what it's about. Saints cheated before this incident but in different ways, we and the rest of football were never squeaky clean.

Did Bielsa get banned? Why would Tonda get banned?
Leeds got a £200k fine. We got far worse. The rules have changed and (perhaps more importantly) there's been a media ****storm with everyone (apart from the majority of people who've actually worked in football) wringing their hands over how awful it is.
