AND IN THE EARLY70's! i never saw ROVERS LOSE AT EASTVILLE!.... never went to derby at eastville... looking back dont really know why not,,went to CARDIFF A FEW TIMES one occassion in my new austin cooper 1078cc left the netham at 205pm in the que for ticket for 255pm just in time to see the kick off .... think I went there 5 times in total before about 1981Back in the 1960s people used to support BOTH teams - whoever was playing at home.
During the late seventies and eighties and ceasing early nineties there was a consistent turf war going on between City (South Bristol) and Rovers (the North) on non matchdays. At its height businesses in the night economy around the centre could not ran by anybody who was openly a Rovers supporter, their businesses would be targeted by City's firm and it would be made challenging to operate. One pub opening on St Nicholas street lasted one day before it was extensively damaged. This was to a degree a purge with City eventually coming out on top.Underrated yes, but the MOST underrated in English football? Probably not.
City and Rovers have no real history of hating each other until the 1970s - and no reason to do so except being local rivals. Back in the 1960s people used to support BOTH teams - whoever was playing at home. Our rivalry is ‘artificial’ and nobody can explain an ‘event’ which caused it.
Unlike Southampton vs Portsmouth for example - with their ‘dock wars’ and even Swindon vs Oxford and their ‘car wars’. Celtic vs Rangers are religion/politics - all the big local derby’s have deep rooted reasons for their ‘hatred’ but City vs Rovers is just because they’re local rivals.
A bit pathetic in my book.
I’ll never support Rovers - any more than I’ll support any other club - but I don’t hate them. They’re a local rival and I’ll engage in banter like I do with the Cardiff boys, but they won’t get ‘special’ attention from me.
Drank in Old Market before it became the Village weird sketch some pubs City some Gas some Irish some gay and a couple that were neutral. The Eagle seemed to fare the worst went in there on a Saturday morning and theres hammer marks across the bar, gonna say the Gas stunt of painting the pub front blue over night was quite funny mind!!During the late seventies and eighties and ceasing early nineties there was a consistent turf war going on between City (South Bristol) and Rovers (the North) on non matchdays.
