With Anis Ben Slimane being selected for the Tunisia squad for the 2026 World Cup in the USA I thought it might be a good idea to start a Canaries World Cup 2026 cup thread as hopefully we will being seeing one or two other City players at the World Cup in The Mayor (Kenny McLean) for Scotland and ALi Ahmed for Canada. Also Former Canary Sara has set his sights on a place in the Brazil Squad

That was the idea of starting this thread so we can keep track of our beloved canaries past & present at the World Cup this year, and if anyone misses anything, someone else can fill in the gaps for them.

If they are all selected, and they almost certainly will be, we will now have five players representing their country this year. How many have we had in total before this? My memory is not good enough to work this out, but up to the turn of the century all our players were British or Irish, so none of very few anyway, up to then.

Buendia makes the Argentina squad, and Sara has been named in the Brazil squad. Might be a bonus payment for us linked to him making international appearances?

Slimane still the only officially announced World Cup Canary, Kovacevic didn't make it. Not sure of the relative quality of the Croatian Premier League (2 of the Bosnian keepers play there) Vs the Championship, but he can't have been far away.

Kenny, Ahmed, Toure, Cordoba still waiting. Not sure there's any other ex-Canaries (other than Kane!) who might make the World Cup.

Buendia is certainly playing well for Villa.
The Mayor should have a good tournament.
Cordoba and Toure might come good.
Let's wish all our players well

I wonder if there is anything about the below which is causing him not to be selected:
“In May 2019, he received his first senior Bosnia and Herzegovina call-up, for UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Finland and Italy, but did not debut.
In February 2023, Kovačević accepted an invitation to the Serbia national team and was expected to make his debut in June. However, according to FIFA eligibility rules, Kovačević can only play for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team

Don't Know if Sarge will make the US squad, will be a laugh if he misses out after he was so eager to fly back home to the states and play in the US to force his way into the US world cup squad

It seems unlikely at this point, others have moved ahead of him, he only has 2 goals since his move and is currently out with a thigh injury.

The first International player I saw playing for City was Noel Kinsey but as he represented Wales I doubt whether he ever played in the World Cup.

He wasn't in the 1958 squad, and the only other year they got to the WC Finals was in 2002 when he was sadly past his prime. Good to hear about him though, 1950 - Great memory you've got there!

Looks like Sara has missed out on the Brazil squad named today

Ex Canary Christian Fassnacht in Swiss squad.
18 goals, 7 assists from 33 games this season from midfield. Certainly didn't think he had that in him when he was at Norwich! The Swiss league clearly suits him.
