Good Morning. It's Wednesday 13th May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Struijk set for surgery in Lithuania

Leeds United will be without several key players for their upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton on Sunday, with defender Pascal Struijk joining Jaydan Bogle, Noah Okafor, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Ilea Gruev on the sidelines. Struijk, 26, had already been a major doubt heading into Monday's match at Spurs, where he was clearly struggling with a hip injury before, eventually being substituted just 10 minutes into the second half in visible discomfort.

Reports now suggest his season may be over entirely, with Struijk reportedly returning to Belgium yesterday ahead of a planned trip to Lithuania where he is expected to undergo surgery to address a persistent hip issue. The timing could not be worse for Leeds, who entertain a Brighton side who they haven't beat since 2017, when a Chris Wood brace secured a 2-0 triumph. Daniel Farke's side will therefore need to overcome both their longstanding hoodoo against the Seagulls and a depleted defensive department as they chase for 13th place.

Leeds will do very well to keep hold of Ampadu this summer

Leeds United will face a significant challenge this summer in their efforts to retain captain Ethan Ampadu, according to New York Times journalist Adam Crafton. The 25-year-old Welsh international has emerged as an indispensable figure at Elland Road, demonstrating the consistency that makes him a target for potential suitors. Crafton expressed his assessment plainly on social media, writing “At the risk of upsetting some Leeds fans, I think they’ll do very well to keep Ampadu this summer. So consistent,”

With Ampadu's current contract reaching its final 12 months, the urgency for 49ers enterprises to secure his long term services cannot be overstated. The club do have an option to extend his terms for a further twelve months, but fans will be desperate to see him put pen to paper for at-least another two years. He joined the Whites in the summer of 2023 for just £7m, and has gone on to make over a hundred appearances, but money talks. If an offer in the region of £50m were to be put forward, it may be too good to turn down.

Nmecha 'got a bit lucky'

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has stated that Lukas Nmecha 'got a bit lucky' by not conceding a penalty in the dying seconds of the Spurs match on Monday night. As the match entered its 14th minute of added time, Nmecha stretched to make a tackle on Maddison and appeared to bring the Spurs playmaker down amid passionate protests from the home side, leading to uproar from the majority of fans, desperately hoping the ref would point to the point.

However, Jarred Gillett awarded a corner instead, and after VAR intervention, the decision stood. Replays revealed that Nmecha had managed to make the faintest contact with the ball before his challenge on Maddison, a detail that proved crucial in determining the outcome. "My first thought when I saw it was 'blimey, they've got a penalty," Gallagher confessed to talkSPORT. "When you see the replay, he does just catch the ball, there's no doubt about that. But it's one of them, he gets a bit lucky, because if he doesn't get the ball it's clearly a penalty."

I seen reason we can't hold onto Ampadu and we must. Hes loved at Leeds and is a huge part of the club going forward. Hell probably get 100k a week new contract and there's not many clubs that will be able to offer more. European football is even possibly on the horizon for Leeds so I think it'd be a wise career change to stay where he is. After all, Farke has played a huge part in making him what he is

I know that players these days don’t necessarily buy into the loyalty thing, but Amps strikes me as the type that might. Think he gets the club.

Anyway the season has now moved into the twilight zone, as we’ve secured our status, and every man and his dog will supposedly be joining us.

I really do hate the off season and all the media transfer crap. Just hope we spend wisely, no Billy big bollocks needed.

So what you are saying is that there is still hope for the Texan tight end William "Average" Ball to sign up for us then ;)

Morning all

Timing for Struijk - It couldn't be better if I am honest, we are safe, he can have surgery 11 days before the season ends, he can then concentrate on being ready for next season.

£50m for Ampadu - If there was a better suited player for £30m, whoever is willing to pay £50m would surely go for them instead. We would have a job attracting a £50m player, I see no sense in selling him.

Penalty - "If he doesn't get the ball it's clearly a penalty" but he did get the ball, it is like saying if the keeper doesn't get a hand to it it's a goal or if it didn't hit the post it would have went in. No luck about it, he made a timely tackle, he touched the ball, Maddison dived

I don’t think madison dived tbh. But it matters not… Nmecha got the ball before he got the man and it wasn’t out of control or dangerous in any manner, so the ref got it right and VAR got it right.

Not a penalty and not lucky (though it was ‘finely judged’). As Risty says…. If my auntie had balls she’d be my… er whatever she identifies as.

Afternoon all,

All good points made today. Perfect timing for Struijk to get the proper treatment he needs. Might also give Bornauw the game time to either show his worth or put himself in the shop window.

Amps stays. He loves it here. He has the chance to lead the club into a golden era as well as captain, hopefully.

"Nmecha was lucky to get a touch. "

Stupid comment. It was a well timed tackle then. If he hadn't have touched the ball and still got away with it then he would have been lucky.

I note the Boro manager who seems a decent bloke is very cut up about the Southampton spygate affair. He has a point

He is a likeable guy and he's done a really good job. Boro play good football but just lack the individual quality in the final 3rd to make it count. He absolutely has a point re the spying. I thought we were out of order when Bielsa did it, but we didn't break any rules. They fined us anyway and then brought in rules to stop it. So Southampton have broken those rules. They should throw the book at them, but they won't.

As an aside i'm a member of the golf club it happened at. You can pretty much watch Boro train whenever you want to. Infact you can also take a few players out if you snap hook off the 18th, a capability i have in my golfing locker. When England were based there a few years ago they put temporary fences up to stop this... so the Boro hierarchy could make this much harder to do if so minded. They shouldn't have to of course.

Sounds like a Benny Hill sketch... the guy running into the changing rooms to disguise himself for his escape <laugh>

Tough golf course that Milky. Like you I was disappointed when the news broke about the Derby incident. I do think it was blown totally out of proportion back then, because of Lampard. Think Saints ought to be binned out of the final, at the expense of Boro - but don’t see it happening.

long but with wide fairways fella so it suits my wayward driving <laugh>

We were in the wrong with the Derby incident but it was the hypocrisy of lampard that wound me up.... and his claims of innocence about what went on at Chelsea. He seriously didn't know that Andre Villas-Boas spied for Chelsea and admitted it, whilst lampard was chelsea vice/captain? Did he think Mourinho hiding in a laundry basket to be smuggled into the dressing room when touchline banned was just a bit of a laugh?

I see a Southampton player is on report for taking the pi$$ out of Ayling's stammer on the pitch yesterday
I wondered what discriminatory meant with regards to Ayling. Bumped into him last weekend, gave him the Leeds salute. He's still Leeds and he knows it!

The Ball boy point blank refused to give Boro the ball back as well at one point. Not covered themselves in glory, have they.

Sat watching greek football tonight and it was dire. It was embarrasing to watch grown men falling over.. Holding their faces and stoppages every few minutes. The standard of the players is very poor.
