We did against Bournemouth 1 and 2 down. Would you prefer a hoof upfield from every keeper interaction? Effectively gifting the ball back to the opponents? I’d rather we play football. What’s the point having Xhaka and Le Fee if you’re hoofing it over their heads?

I get that we need to be more clever and sometimes try to force the press back. But to completely do away with it is literally 80s long ball football (Steve Evan’s and Parkinson style)

No thanks. Time and place though
No I don’t want that,

But I don’t want to get nervous or anxious EVERY time we do it.
Teams have worked this out now, and rush at defenders/keepers.
Only works when you the players and don’t dillydally on the ball.

I think there are times where you need to be pragmatic. Early on it was clear that Forest were pressing use high and they were very good at it, yet we continued to play out from the back and invite pressure. In those situations there is no harm in going long for 10 mins just to take the pressure off, that 2nd goal was coming a mile off and to be fair we’ve been flirting with conceding like that for a while. Doesn’t mean there has to be an overhaul of the system, just adapt to the situation.

As for going gung-ho with Ballard and Alderete up front in injury time, that was just naive
To be honest they also picked up our long balls to Brobbey who wasnt very effective either last night. We were physically weaker, slower to the ball, passing too slow, sloppy, not as hungry, poor final ball, poor set pieces defensively and into the box. Pretty much every player, plus the goalkeeper was slow coming out and indecisive. I cant think of anything goid, it wasn’t one thing or another. I think Le Bris was right, everything 20% worse. I think he said 10.

I thought we looked very hungry until they scored. Then some nice passing in the middle third in the second half, but, as you say. Final ball was rubbish and we could be playing now without scoring!

Was interesting to talk to the loud bloke and his lad who sit near me Last few games they have been critical of everything and tonight didnt stop complaining all first half. Turns out they only started coming the back end of last season and this is their first year as season ticket holders.

When they said tonight was the worst they had ever seen and I asked if they remembered some of the league 1 games that were genuinely awful, their answer was "didnt come then as it wasnt worth the effort"
Do you sit next to me :emoticon-0102-bigsm There’s two who are exactly like this. Spend the whole game moaning. Was fixated on us being 5 at the back

I think our problem at the moment, is our passing, apart from one lovely quick passing move in the second half everything was laboured and slow,.
The number of passes that were under hit leading to interceptions or a defender arriving at the same time as the ball was too high. We do look so much better when we zip the ball about, pass and move.

As I stated last night, it was just one of those games, it happens. Just put it behind us and move on. I'm surprisingly quite sanguine about it, however I do expect a much better performance at Wolves.

We dont even have to go long mate and hoof it, just pass it to someone further away than the edge of our own box lol... We saw it with Onien against the Mags aswell, i literally have my heart in my mouth everytime i see us do it.
There’s definitely a time and place not to continue with it but if the movement of players to make space is good and our passing is better… we could take out half a team 30 yards from our goal with a few quick passes and good movement.

RLB thinks it’s the right tactic so the only way to make it work is to keep trying it on the pitch. Same as he has shown with player development, keep them on the pitch and at some point it comes together.

Whoever invented passing it out from the back, I hope -

You always step in fresh dog poi
You pillow never has a cold side
That you car fails every MOT
That always get a speeding fine
That you always get the wrong takeaway order
Your pint is always flat
That you get bit by bat
That your plane leaves without you
That your smoke alarms always go off and you have no spare batteries
(Please keep this going)

How many times have we conceded from doing that.
That their next crap is a pineapple

It is a blot on his rap sheet mind. Our worst home defeat for over 60 years so they need to bounce

Sorry but what? We have been very good at passing it out from the back most of the season. Got us some good goals over the years too (Reading and Huddersfield)

Or would you rather we play like Wimbledon in the 80s and simply hoof everything long?
You mix play up not stick to the same old same.
Second half we moved the ball quicker and played less from the back and we dominated.
The difference between the two teams they wanted it more in the first half and our passing was very slack unfortunately it cost us.

I stayed off here last night. Imo it was a weird game from our lads last night? They were probably getting on top then as soon as Forrest scored they seemed absolutely bereft of ideas or the ability to make simple passes (to be fair they gave it away at the back several times and have done for a few weeks). I have said a few times now we have been poor attacking all season, we labour away but hardly make the right choice in the final third but its very very rare the defence gets it so wrong.

But their goals, my ****ing god did they have a helping hand or hige slice of luck in all of them! The first was an og probably going across the face of the box and away until it it Hume, the second gifted to them but decent calm pass and finish, the 4th deflected into the perfect place for the finish which again was very good, the third was well worked and had no luck to it and the 5th well I wasn’t watching anymore by then sorry! Don't get me wrong we were poor and they were very good imo and I struggle to see how they are where they are on that performance but its not every night where you have a couple deflect on just the right area either!

I really don't get how tactically inept Reg came across yesterday to not react to the situation? Was it him punishing the senior lads bringing Riggy off? If so, why not bring a striker?

It stuns me because I think he's class.

But conceding 5 at home is just ridiculous unless its Man City.

If we played like we did against City at home, we would have murdered them, but we didn't.

Are the lads worn out? Are we void of ideas? Are our tactics a bit basic and easily fought against?

9 goals in two games is very bad, imagine the team for Wolves will be massively different, O9 probably back in.

Our lack of wingers sometimes kills us in games. Brobbey has been anonymous for two games now.

I would have Rigg central next game, get Talbi and Mayenda in.

RLB definitely got it wrong last night, from starting Hume at left back to persisting with Le Fee on the left. We need width and Talbi can offer that...not to mention he is the only one who will shoot from distance for some reason. Our reluctance to do that infuriates me.

I love Brobbey, but in a game where he isn't even getting scraps never mind a decent supply you might as well play Wilson or Mayenda.

Just hope we change things next game as if we play like that against wolves it will be 3 defeats on the bounce. They will have watched that and will be hoping we setup the same. They will try a high pressure and push our midfielders and defenders into mistakes knowing we have no width and take unnecessary risks at the back.

I'm sure something will change though.

Need to revert back to the start of season. Hume back at right back with 2 of Mukiele, Ballard and Aldrette and Reinaldo left back.

Le Fee has to go middle with Xhaka and Sadiki. Hopefully Traore back with Talbi and one up front.

Definitely more attack minded and a better balance to the team.

Alderete will also shoot from a distance.
The problem is, every time he does it goes 100 foot over the bar.

Like everybody else in Sunderland, I want Le Fee in the middle. He is wasted out on the wing.

Using O’Nien as the yardstick against the nags, when he was trying to go long (he was going over the top and slipped as he kicked it eyes never looked towards Xhaka) is a bit unfair. He dies that long pass well. Agree totally with what you say though, long ball versulonger pass to player in space.

Yeah fair enough mate, but the goal still came from messing about with the ball in our own box , something I would like us to stop doing. Im not a fan of hoofing the ball out either but a happy medium would be nice
