Owner and managers
Steve Gibson is a life-long supporter and became Chairman in 1994, owning approximately 90% of the club. He oversaw the move from Ayresome Park to the Riverside Stadium (a brand new all-seater stadium with a capacity of almost 34,000.

Bryan Robson, former England international and captain, was first player/manager and then manager of Middlesbrough from 1994 until 2001. Middlesbrough (nicknamed the Boro) was one of the founding members of the Premier League and the club reached 3 Wembley cup finals (1997-98) under Robson's leadership before finally winning the League Cup in 2004 (Boro’s first trophy in 128 years) and reaching the UEFA Cup Final in 2006 when Steve McClaren was manager.

The club spent seven years in the Championship after the relegation under Gareth Southgate in 2009. Aitor Karanka (previously assistant manager at Real Madrid under José Mourinho) was appointed as the first foreign manager au Middlesbrough in November 2013 and the club was promoted back to the Premier League in 2016 before being relegated again after one season and has remained in the Championship since that time.

The current manager is Kim Hellberg, who enjoyed success in Sweden before replacing Rob Edwards as head coach of Middlesbrough in November 2025. Edwards (one of many former Watford head coaches) who left after replacing Michael Carrick in the summer - just three months into the season - to take the Wolves job.

Players
Famous players such as Juninho Paulista (whom I recommended almost one year earlier to Watford before he became a Brazilian international) and Fabricio Ravanelli (an Italian international) played for Middlesbrough during the 1990s when Boro was in the Premier League.


Hayden Hackney is a 23 year old midfield player, who emerged from the Boro’ youth academy. He was chosen as the Championship Player of the Season at the EFL awards in April 2026. Alan Browne (Republic of Ireland international) is a central midfielder on loan from Sunderland.

Morgan Whittaker (winger) is the leading scorer with 12 goals, but Tommy Conway (striker and Scottish international) has also scored 10 goals. Midfielder Hayden Hackney has scored 6 goals (including one in the F.A. Cup) and made 8 assists.

Dael Fry (central defender and the captain), Luke Ayling (right back/central defender, who was signed from Leeds in January 2024) and Matt Taggert (left back on loan from Newcastle) are all experienced defenders. Sol Brynn is the first choice goalkeeper.

Watford line-up
This match at the Riverside Stadium will be Watford’s final away game and the penultimate fixture of the 2025-26 season. It could also be Ed Still’s penultimate game in charge. Middlesbrough lie in 5th position in the table and – while the club almost certain to finish in the play-offs – it is still competing to finish in the automatic promotion places.

Watford has fallen to 15th position and can neither be promoted nor relegated. Some players have given the impression in recent games that the season is already over for them.

Ed Still has almost a full squad from which to choose, but Jeremy Ngakia and Marc Bola may not yet be fit enough to start. Pierre Ekwah has returned from paternity leave in France. Rocco Vata and Hector Kyprianou are the only players who are still unavailable, but they have started training again.

Watford's defence may be made a little tighter by playing three central defenders and it is good to see both Ngakia and Bola returning to the team as wing-backs, but it is difficult to see how that line-up will create chances and score. Only one recognized out-and-out defender (apart from the goalkeeper) on the bench, but plenty of attacking players to use as potential substitutes.

I suspect that Still's plan is to bring on some of the attacking players later in the game, but the problem is that Watford probably will already be losing by that stage.

A brilliant strike by Whittaker! Some people will be blaming Selvic for conceding from that distance, but I think that Whittaker has to be given a great deal of credit for that free kick.

There appeared to be some poor defending for Middlesbrough's second goal by Strelec, although the finish was possibly a little fortuitous.
