    Luis Suárez banned for eight matches for 'insulting' Patrice Evra

    The Liverpool striker Luis Suárez has been banned for eight matches and fined £40,000 after being found guilty of misconduct, regarding "using insulting words towards" Patrice Evra of Manchester United.

    The allegations centred around an incident during a Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield on 15 October, during which Evra claimed Suárez racially abused him "at least 10 times".

    Both players gave evidence to a three-man panel, led by Paul Goulding QC, as did the Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, who has vigorously defended the Uruguay player since the allegation was made by Evra to the French television station Canal Plus after the game. Liverpool's defence involved arguing that the word "negro" does not necessarily have racist connotations in Uruguay. Evra said that was unacceptable and that Suárez was being offensive as the pair clashed repeatedly in the second half at Anfield.

    A Football Association statement said: "An Independent Regulatory Commission has today found a charge of misconduct against Luis Suárez proven, and have issued a suspension for a period of eight matches as well as fining him £40,000, pending appeal.

    "On 16 November 2011, The Football Association charged Luis Suárez with misconduct contrary to FA Rule E3 in relation to the Liverpool FC versus Manchester United FC fixture on 15 October 2011.

    "A hearing took place from 14-20 December 2011 before an Independent Regulatory Commission of The FA to consider the charge.

    "The Independent Regulatory Commission announced its decision on 20 December 2011, which is as follows:

    "Mr Suárez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3(1);

    "the insulting words used by Mr Suárez included a reference to Mr Evra's colour within the meaning of Rule E3(2);

    "Mr Suárez shall be warned as to his future conduct, be suspended for eight matches covering all first team competitive matches and fined the sum of £40,000;

    "the [penalty] is suspended pending the outcome of any appeal lodged by Mr Suárez against this decision.

    "The Independent Regulatory Commission will provide written reasons for its decision in due course setting out:

    (a) the findings of fact made by it;

    (b) the reasons for its decision finding the charge proved; and

    (c) the reasons for the penalty.

    "Mr Suárez has the right to appeal the decision of the Independent Regulatory Commission to an Appeal Board. An appeal must be lodged within 14 days of the date of the written reasons for the decision.

    "The penalty is suspended until after the outcome of any appeal, or the time for appealing expires, or should Mr Suárez decide not to appeal. The reason for this is to ensure that the penalty does not take effect before any appeal so that Mr Suárez has an effective right of appeal.

    8 matches is a lucky escape IMO considering you can be banned for three for preventing a goalscoring opportunity.

    That's my Dream Team ****ed then!!On a serious note if the FA have taken this decision they must have found irrefutable evidence,so how come there hasn't been a police investigation as there is in the Terry situation?

    I think the police investigation into Terry was launched because somebody actually complained to them about it. I could be wrong but I don't think this is the case with Saurez.

    8 days and £40k for Suarez. That should mean at least a life ban, bankruptcy and a ceremonial crucifixion on Loftus Road centre circle for JTRE.

    Is it because he is not England's captain? I also have Suarez in my dream team, I hope he appeals and wins I think maybe some players at certain clubs are untouchable.

    Comeon Joey and the boys give all your loyal supporters 3 points for Christmas.

    Merry Christmas everyone and a prosperous and happy new year (a midtable fininsh in the prem and a cup run would do as well).

    with Suarez it was Evra's word against his. - Terry's punishment should he be found guilty I would suggest may be harsher depending on the video evidence the police have.
    I would be surprised if Suarez doesn't appeal against this decision though.

    lets hope so. His defence is even more ridiculous than Suarez, and hopefully the new TV footage will prove it. Might even enjoy the euros if he's out of the squad

    Really find this sickening. He has been found guilty by the FA, one of the weakest organisations on earth, of persistent racial abuse. If these ****ers have the balls to say this I have no doubt it is true. He is told not to play for a bit and fined less than a weeks wages. His club will doubtless try to defend him, because for them it is money, rather than ethics, which is important. They would rather have an ignorant twat running around abusing people than miss out on a champions league place. I know Shankly would hate this - a proper socialist - ' football is more important than life and death' - most people don't realise this was meant ironically, and only an idiot would believe it, and Shankly was far from that. But any club would take the position Liverpool has - commercial 'loyalty' to a chattel who is not 'loyal' to anything except his wallet is more important than right or wrong. As has been pointed out frequently on other threads for most of us this would have meant instant dismissal, no dole etc. Quite rightly. I don't care whether it is Suarez ( a sublime player, beautiful to watch) Terry or one of our players, this stinks and is one of the many reasons I have just about had it with everything in football except for physically being there and watching games and not thinking about it between match days. Press, pundits, ****ing club press conferences, Twitter, the sodding interweb, these spoilt twats are everywhere as if they are more important than anything else. All I want is to see ordinary blokes who are good at playing a game playing it with skill, passion and honesty. Sure they can be paid well for what is a short career for which they have usually sacrificed their education. But £50k a week? Come off it. I hope they can look at themselves in the mirror once they have retired and say 'I deserve this, and i did my job as an entertainer with dignity and honesty to the best of my ability'
    Right, rant over. I will be at the Sunderland game tomorrow screaming my head off and hoping my son has a great time. But the next person who refers to footballers as role models in my presence can expect a fat lip.

    I'm surprised at some of the reaction on this thread. Bill and SB, they couldn't possibly ban him for more than 8 matches could they? I think the punishment fits the crime. 8 matches is almost quarter a League Season.

    A message has been sent to all by the FA: This behaviour will not be tolerated.

    Fair enough Swords, I am having a bit bit of a downer with the whole sport at the moment and this tipped me over the edge. It's a message, just wish their contracts said racial abuse - you're out. I know your views on this and can see the point of view, but if a bus driver gets the sack for this, why not a footballer?
