Good Morning. It's Friday 6th March, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Will Farke go all out to reach the last 8 of the FA Cup

It has been over twenty years since the Whites last graced the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, but are well placed to do so, when Daniel Farke's former side Norwich City come to Elland Road this weekend. The drought goes back to the 2002/03 campaign when after wins against Scunthorpe Utd, Gillingham (after a replay), and a controversial win over Crystal Palace that Leeds last reached the last eight, only to lose the next round to Sheffield Utd.

On paper, it looks like a golden opportunity. Leeds have had a relatively easy run so far, edging past Derby County and Birmingham City in previous rounds to set up another potential Championship scalp, but it poses a massive dilemma. Leeds would likely steamroll Norwich with a full strength side, bringing a sense of nostalgia back to Elland Road. However, in the high-stakes world of modern football, sentimental glory often clashes with harsh reality.

Leeds are currently walking a relegation tightrope. With a notably thin squad and the heavy fog of fatigue setting in, every minute played in the cup feels like a gamble against their Premier League survival hopes. Back-to-back defeats have left the club hovering just three points above the drop zone, with nine massive league games remaining, including a potential "winner-takes-all" finale against West Ham.

It’s the ultimate footballing dilemma: do you chase the romantic dream of a quarter-final, or protect your weary stars to ensure the club’s top-flight future remains intact?

Will the new Championship play off format help or hinder relegated clubs

The EFL is overhauling the Sky Bet Championship play-off format, expanding the race for the Premier League from four teams to six. Starting in the 2026/27 season, the battle for that final promotion spot is set to become a even more of a lottery.

Under this new structure, the promotion dream stays alive for clubs finishing as low as 8th. While the top two teams still celebrate automatic promotion and those in 3rd and 4th earn a crucial bye to the semi-finals, the real tension begins with the new quarter-final-style knockouts. 5th will hosts 8th, and 6th hosts 7th, in one-legged, winner-takes-all nail biting scenario. The survivors then advance to the traditional two-legged semi-finals before the grand finale at Wembley.

Should the worst happen this season, and Leeds find themselves in the Championship next time round, you'd like to think that a top eight finish would be almost guaranteed, but the play-off's have never been kind to the Whites. They have competed in six Football League play-off campaigns and failed to earn promotion in every single one. Furthermore, the Whites have lost their last three matches at Wembley without scoring a single goal (2008 and 2024 play-off finals, plus the 1996 League Cup final).

EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch believes this expansion will "further strengthen" the league by keeping more clubs in the hunt until the final whistle of the season. However, not everyone is sold on the idea. Some Premier League clubs have expressed concerns that allowing an 8th-placed side a path to the top flight might "dilute" the league’s quality.

Whilst giving an 8th placed team a shot at the "promised land" would undoubtably make a superb underdog story, it does little to compensate the club who finishes third. the 3rd-place team has won the play-offs roughly 38% of the time. In contrast, the the 6th-place team has only been promoted in approximately 17% of seasons since its introduction in 1988.

Morning all,

Give me the FA cup any day over staying up.

Relegations and promotions come and go but winning a trophy is what football is about. That feeling and memory will last forever.

My best friend is a Palace fan and he wouldn't swap their win last season for anything. Being at Wembley with his Dad and daughter will be a memory that will live forever.

This is probably our best chance in a long time to get within touching distance if the cup. Let's take it

They have had a 5 day turn around, so Mr. Farke this is a golden chance to play the team and formation that may keep us up.
3 at the back 5 across the middle and two up front.
My team would be
————————Darlow ———————
Bogle ———— Bijol—————Struijk
James—Tanaka—Ampadau—Gnonto
——————— Stach——————
———-Nmecha—— DCL ———-
Get out there and demolish them then put subs on, I just hope he mixes it up, like at
Corners, put James and Gnonto on the half way line by the touch line, corners all the big lads stand on the 18 yd line, drop the ball on the pen spot and run in and attack it, both set ups are a nightmare to mark.
Will DF mix it up, l doubt it, let’s see.

Let’s get through this game, should have enough in the squad to win this at home and go from them. Build up the confidence & also have a week break until the next game so fitness shouldn’t be a problem. Don’t want two loses at home on the bounce. It’s all still well in our hands league wise as got to play Wolves, Spurs, West Ham, Burnley, Palace & Brighton. Even Brentford at home. Defo can see 3 wins out of those.

We've just had 2 home losses on the bounce.

After 2 home losses, we need a win badly to just lift the fans spirits (if nothing else).
I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t look to go as far as we can in the competition.

Been a bit disappointed with Bogle. He hasn’t appeared to be capable of trapping a bag of cement, recently. Thought we had little threat going forward on our right flank on Tuesday, and not a great deal better on the left.

Think our last few games has demonstrated we miss Okafors ability going forward.

Here's the thing....

In the 16 PL matches since Citeh away, Leeds have only won THREE ... that's not great, and our struggle to put teams away has kept us in the relegation dog fight ... nowhere near safe yet, badly need wins not draws now

For the Norwich game, it may well do to select your starting eleven and let them have a proper go by playing all out attacking football ... go and play with no fear and just stick the damn ball in the net ... help the players to get the winning feeling back and hopefully knock us back into form

That said, I think Farke will mix it up and rest at least half his squad, giving the likes of James, Gnonto, Longstaff and Tanaka some much-needed game time ... guess there's no wrong or right here, but ultimately staying up is the priority, FA Cup is secondary ... it's simply too much of a gamble to get relegated, no guarantee of instant promotion out of that hell hole called the Championship

Play the team that played Sunderland and tell them they are all playing for their places and have until half time to prove their worth or they are coming off.

**** em

Rodon, Bogle and Ampadu look like they need a rest, bench them

We need to put out a strong team, we can’t afford three back to back defeats

Not happy with the new EFL format, the average points difference between 8th and 3rd must be huge, 8th shouldn’t be given a chance

Over the last 11 seasons the average points difference between 3rd place in the Championship and 8th place is 15.9 points, only 4.3 points more than the average difference between 3rd and 6th place.

Last season the 6th placed team were 22 points behind 3rd and reached the play offs, whilst the 8th placed team were 24 points behind 3rd. On 3 occasions in the last 11 seasons 8th placed has finished 1 point behind 6th place.

I'd prefer a play off method similar to how they do the National leagues North and South, which have 6 teams in the play offs. 5th play at home to 6th and 4th play at home to 7th. The winners of 5 v 6 play away to 3rd placed finishers, whilst the winners of 4 v 7 play away to 2ndd place finishers. The winners of those ties play a one leg final, which is held at the home ground of the team that finished highest in the league placings. (only 1 team is automatically promoted in the NLN, so 2nd to 7th compete in the play offs)

So in our play off season in 2023/24, we would have played at Elland Road against either WBA or Middlesborough, and providing we progressed the final would be held at Elland Road where we would have face the winners of Southampton v the winners of Hull v Norwich. To have got promoted 8th placed Middlesborough would have needed to win 3 games all played away from home, whilst ourselves as 3rd placed finishers would have needed to play 2 games, both at Elland Road
