Most of you will probably be aware but for those who aren't there is a very nasty virus called Internet Defender. It poses as a security alert and tells you that your computer is at risk. It then goes on to list a load of bogus threats that you need to have removed to protect your computer and offers you the protection you need. If you ignore it you will then get a message saying your computer is under attack from another computer, quoting an IP address. The aim is to frighten you into buying their product.

Whatever you do, do not install it. Remove it via the Task Manager. It will continue to pop up until you remove all the applications and DLLs that it has infested your computer with. You need someone who knows what they are doing to remove anything from the processes and registries but, if you catch it early you may get away with searching for any files containing the word "Defender" and deleting them.

If it gets too far your computer will be infested with files containing random numbers and you could have all your applications disabled and your internet access disabled.

Once infected it will even prevent Norton from running its Norton Power Eraser and must be sorted manually.

I don't know how my computer got infected but it happened shortly after downloading an image of an old man and a speech bubble image. I was going to put up a joke "And now" image next to my photo of "When I as 17". May not be connected but just mentioned it in case.

There are some real *******s about.

Lots of info on this virus if you Google Internet Defender or Internet Defender Removal.

Had a similar problem last year, used Malwarebytes Anti-malware on a memory stick (the virus would not let me access my programs) to get rid of it.

Call me a cynic, but most viruses and trojans are written by the very same people who sell you anti-virus/malware software. Great racket they've got going.

this internet defender really is a **** of the highest order.

best way to get rid of it
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-internet-defender (scroll half way down the page for start of instructions) pretty simple to follow.

if i remember rightly, it also stops you opening programs. why is why its always a good idea to start up in safe mode when trying to get rid of it.

another good tool which i used to have is spyware doctor. that will probably get rid of it on its own, it cleans absolutely everything. but do the above instructions just incase.

it really makes my piss boil, this sort of stuff. you can just imagine the sad sap prick whos responsible for creating such stuff
