The BBC have an interview with NB saying he will let McShane go to strengthen his chance at Euro squad place, Harper will be off too. Coming in, tough one, I would say a young defender who could cover CB and RB, and a striker, who? Your guess is as good as mine!
I'd only be interested in a quality Striker, and perhaps defensive cover. I suppose if Brady doesn't stay with us, we could look for another winger. Send McShane out on loan (providing we bring in CB/RB cover), with the option to recall if we suffer some injuries at the back. Otherwise I think we have a pretty good squad. I wouldn't be tempted to drop anybody from the starting line up, and if we did bring in a striker it would be harsh on Fryatt/Mclean to leave them out.
Realistically nobody goes because we don't have enough players who are good enough to be selling any, and the players we don't want haven't been in demand for the last 3 transfer windows or they'd be gone. Coming in we need: a pacey winger - could be in the form of Brady extending a strong striker who can play 90 minutes and score goals - Sharp, Rhodes on loan if a big PL club sign him, there really arent a lot a centre back - we're light on numbers, not really sure who though, Halford seems to like playing there now and would also act as cover as a RB if McShane goes somewhere on loan. We could also do with a keeper, but that might be worth waiting until the summer because of Huddersfield sell Rhodes and screw up their promotion we might be able to get Smithies. We might actually manage it if we try late in January with a "we can help you represent your country in the Olympics" offer. Failing that Amos might be an option because Man U aren't going to name 4 keepers in their 25, and Amos and de Gea both need registering next season.
I'd like to see McShane, Olofinjana, Kilbane, Simpson and Harper leave to free up the wage bill. Heard a rumour of Cairney going to Donny in part-exchange for Billy Sharp. I'd definitely take that. For coming in, number 1 priority is a permanent goalkeeper. Number 2 is a centre forward who can make his own chances, preferably a bigger guy but again, I'd take a Billy Sharp. Number three is versatile defensive cover who isn't McShane.
Players leaving I think will be Simpson, Harper, Mcshane, Atkinson and possibly Olifinjana. Would love to see us sign Billy Sharp, not sure how likely that is though. Definitely need another striker or two up front, a keeper, cover for defence and depending on the Brady situation another winger.
Reckon McShane, Harper and possibly Cairney will be heading out, either loans or permanent, on who comes in, a lot depends on how far the Allams are willing to dig to support their push for promotion, given the investment they have already made. I don`t think we`re far off, and a couple of astute signings could well see us over the line, the future is bright, the future is black and amber.
IN A fit keeper Defensive cover (RB, CB or both if McShane goes) Brady til the summer A striker who can play up front on his own and do everything (ideally) but also play alongside Fryatt if needed. OUT McShane if he wants Harper Simpson (maybe)
Out: McShane (loan) Harper (free) Cairney (Part Ex) Brady (loan ends) Cullen (loan/free) Kilbane (loan / free) Atkinson (loan) Simpson (sold) In; Fit Keeper (buy) Sharpe (buy) Loan defender (rb/cb) or winger
if the Portsmouth players dont get paid in January, as has been predicted, then Harford and others will be rich pickings.
Sheff Utd are in dire need to slash their wage budget so there is a distinct possibility. It has been mooted in their local paper about a potential loan to buy in January to Ipswich.
Matthew Lowton for me, if we are going for Sheff U. Ched Evans hasn't convinced me to be honest. A fair few Championship clubs are looking at Bilel Mohsni at Southend, he's 6ft 3 and can play, strangely enough, at CB or as a Forward and has 11 goals this season playing in both positions. He's also 24, so would still be in the "young and hungry category", worth a look if you ask me. If we need an out and out goalscorer then Gary Madine would fit the bill. Probably cost no more than £1.5m if we do a player swap or offer clauses. Driver or Templeton from Hearts would be great if Brady doesn't stay - could be available on a free as well if they get their contracts torn up. We really need a number 1, but I'm becoming less panicky about having Gulacsi in goal. My only worry is that all good clubs should have 3 goalkeepers and I just wonder if Oxley is up to the task (He's been out for ages apparently - Cracknell has been playing in the ressies). So I'd go for Shwan Jalal at Bournemouth if we can't get Mannone back (although I suspect AP has been talking to Arsenal).
We may have an agreement in place with Man U or another big club that we can have one of their young keepers if we need one, but until then they want to keep them with them to play in their reserves rather than sit in the stands with us.
I'd like to see Mannone come in as a more permanent keeper. Simpson back in the squad with Ched Evans, giving us four decent strikers. If Brady leaves then Andros Townsend in on loan. Olofinjana OR Harper out, despite getting on fine without them, if we sell both, then have a minor injury crisis in the centre of midfield we could have real problems. Cullen and Devitt back out on loan. No real ideas for centre-half cover, but we'll definitely need it if Macca goes. I'm not saying this is what will happen, I very much doubt it, but it's what I'd like to see.
Then it's usually too late to replace them in the matchday squad anyway. The sub keeper goes into the first team and you have to play with only 4 subs. (you can still make 3)
Buying Sharp would be a great statement of intent by the owners. Hopefully bring in some more half season ticket sales.
