It should never be underestimated the importance of hard work and playing for the manager. This squad seem to be willing to work harder than most for their manager.

the game develops and changes and some managers embrace it and some are wedded to their own tactics. I critics FARKE for being an arrogant self obsessed coach who refuses to change. That theory is wrong however as DF has moved to a long throw routine weeks ago. I reckon he has looked at his squad which is lacking up front and decided to use the weapons he invested in and that would mean he doesn’t need to have Dan James who is now out for 8 weeks and he doesn’t need Okafor or Aaronson. He now has 3/4 strikers who would love to work as a 2 up top and I include Gnonto who shouldn’t be underestimated as a second striker. He’s done that for Italy. He also has Okafor who can do it. He has at his disposal 3 CBs plus Bornauw, 2 wing backs plus Justin a shed load of DMs so why not use what you have. I believe he is recognising he has more success playing to his strongest weapons and if he carries on getting a tune out of this andngetsnsime ammo up front in January he may have 2 real systems to use and swap. The ball is firmly in his court now. I was happy after we lost to City but because we won the second half 2-1 and obviously happy last night. We have scored 5 and conceded 2 in the last 135 minutes which is a massive improvement on the 12 previous games

What do we think to this strategy of passing the ball back from an attacking position… all the way back to the keeper for him to hoof it long (with varying degrees of accuracy). I understand the logic that if the opposition defence is set, the act of passing back will draw them out and creat space improving the chances of picking up the second ball from the keeper’s hoof. So I understand the logic (I think) but I’m not sure it really works. Most of the time you just give the ball back to the opposition in what is an infuriating manner. Are the percentages worth it v a regulation lumped cross into the box from the man originally in possession?

Its as simple as going long to a big bastard up front and getting team mates around him to pick up the pieces with runners giving options.

Same scenario would work in a 4-3-3 but committing the wingers forward to play off DCL or Nmecha. Aaronson cant do it.

yeh I understand the wingers were meant to pick up the second balls in 433, but usually weren’t close enough. My comment wasn’t really about formation more about the tactic. as I watched us pass back to Perri from a promising position only for him to slice it off the pitch a few times. It left me leaving wondering what the point was.

That happened alot in the 433. It did my head in.

On Wednesday, the times I did notice this happen was after we had just won the ball back but the full backs hadn't pushed out of the back 5 so there were few options for midfielders to pass too so we went backwards. That's a limitation of the three at the back. The wing backs have to be extremely quick and have a lot of stamina.

Yeh its happened all season, drives me bonkers as the guy in possession might as well just put the ball in from a shorter distance than the keeper if you're going long anyway... i believe the idea is it draws the opposition out so creates more space for knock downs etc, but it drives me bonkers as you go from having possession to likely giving it away. In a game like Wednesday where we were starved of possession for long periods and forced to defend it felt like we were just giving the ball away by choice when we needed a spell on the ball.

I think both fullbacks did well on Wednesday on the whole, had a lot of work to do. Telling that Bogle was subbed. We don't see that normally. He was rinsed for the goal and Garnacho had him on toast. Whether that was fatigue or just struggling with elite players, I don't know.

Thats a really good analysis. The stats show we were ahead on long passes. My concern was the 1v1s like against Bogle and if they turned him then they were free to get a cross or shot in as there was space. Faster wingbacks or whatever we're calling them now would help. Not sure if we were defending by zones at times as a few people seemed to be in no mans land when Chelsea were running in.

A personal hate of mine is having the winger one v one against the full back but the winger stopping and playing the ball back to the full back. Wingers should be told to take on the full back at every opportunity no matter what. If they tackle the winger it's fine but if the winger gets past the full back it opens everything up.

The best piece of coaching advice I had was when I was a kid at Bradford City. Coach basically said that goals come from mistakes and your job is to continuously give opposition players decisions to make. The more decisions you give them to make, the more chances that they'll make the wrong decision and that is a mistake. I still view the game in that way. Makes sense to me.
