Do people on benefits pay tax on anything over £12570 ?

My wife and i decided not to have children, as other couples have. So why should we help support other peoples families.

 

How many kids do families need to have before you become a twat and don’t want to pay for them?

 

As I have said there are issues that need to be addressed and I think we need cross party debate about this. However, this government is encouraging the long term unemployed back into work and is introducing financial management into the curriculum.

However, letting kids go hungry should not be seen as acceptable as we will never break this depressing cycle.

As a general point we still live in a generally civil society and what is wrong in helping others? I rarely use the health service as I’m fit and healthy and my kids no longer go to school, but I have no issues with funding these services.

Let’s not fall into the trap of these self interested non dom billionaires who are spending a fortune on public opinion and see no benefit in a decent civilised society.

This is a big problem for our country. We created a massive underclass in the 80s when we chucked millions on the scrap heap. Look at our mining communities as example and we did next to nothing to get those communities back on their feet after massive job losses and this is the long term legacy.

As I have stated we need to get the long term unemployed back into work. Whatever your political viewpoint that just makes sense on so many levels particularly the long term unemployed and their families more than anyone else. This government is trying to do that.

We also need to get financial management into school curriculums which this government has recently agreed to do. This was obviously lost in the noise of the right wing media but is fundamental in giving kids (some will likely have little good role models at home) basic financial skills so they are not a drain on society and see the value of work.

However as you continue to labour the point, letting kids go hungry should never be an option as hungry kids will never get a good education and we will never break this cycle.

If you are happy for kids to go hungry to teach their parents a lesson fair enough but I think it’s fundamentally wrong and will do absolutely nothing to tackle the major problems in our society.

The question? We don’t let kids go hungry full stop as we will never break this depressing cycle. A hungry kid will never learn.

We have to put the the resources in to get the long term unemployed back to work and there should be no political point scoring to make that happen (as I have said we need some cross party consensus to make this happen). We need to use a carrot in the first instance but ultimately a stick at some point. I recognise some on the left may have an issue with that but given where this country now is it does need to happen.

Without repeating myself financial management skills on the school curriculum is a good start. Let’s not stop there…let’s give kids decent cooking skills at school and get those who use foodbanks onto eating on a budget cookery lessons as a requirement of free food.

Thanks to the last government our country is broken and the tories legacy goes back to 80s with the long term unemployed. There are no quick fixes.

Maybe you should expand your political input beyond right wing media? You might educate yourself and realise the state of the country which this government inherited.

No quick fix but at least it is trying given the poor state of the economy thanks to unecesarry austerity, Brexit, reckless Covid spending (has Mone paid back the £200m yet?) which were none of this government’s making.

I don’t know why I bite. I don’t think he’s ever answered a question, except with one of his own.

 

There are some good reads here when the debate gets down to the nuts and bolts. Talking about the problems in their essence and not as much point scoring / blaming.

I could see the merits of a child cap but also the pitfall's. Let’s be honest if Rach had done nothing the same people who are criticising for this would be criticising for doing nothing.

As I have said we need political consensus in targeting the long term unemployed with no political point scoring but in the meantime we never let kids go hungry.

I won’t fall into any trap you are trying to set mate all I would say if you think it’s acceptable to let kids go hungry to somehow teach their parents a lesson is fundamentally wrong imho.

however where you and me agree (I think) is we need to tackle the fundamental issues that allow kids to be in this unacceptable situation
