1-0 Ipswich. Maybe we should’ve kept Nunez on … Philogene cross in and Nunez unmarked to head in. Pretty poor Hull defending but rewards a slightly more positive second half for us.
And the floodgates may well be opening. 2-0 Ipswich with Akpom scoring a poacher’s goal. Maybe a future at centre forward is on for him - his more natural position and both Hirst and Azon hardly putting up great cases for an alternative. Before that, we should’ve gone 2-0 up with Nunez charging forwards with four Ipswich attackers against two scrambling Hull defenders. Poor decision making ruins the attack and Nunez squanders a great chance.
An improved second half - helped by a well-timed triple substitution - guided us to a deserved win away to a tough team. Keeping a clean sheet against one of this division’s best attacking sides is an added bonus. Philogene and Akpom made the difference off the bench. Another solid defensive outing. And that’s now six games unbeaten and we break into the top six. McKenna’s constant chopping and changing of the starting eleven rightly questioned here and elsewhere. But with the benefit of hindsight, I think he got it right today with the fresh players coming in. Take those three points any day of the week. Onto Oxford away, who can’t even beat Norwich at home (but did get a last minute equaliser).
Great result and up to 4th place with a game in hand. Kind of glad Coventry won, means that second place is closer than if they had lost to 'boro. Norwich still struggling, it's been a good day!
Great result and somehow after never really setting the world alight we are 4th with a game in hand which if won could take us up to 2nd. I thought defensively tonight we were pretty solid, really impressed with our sweeper keeper Walton, who barely put a foot wrong and his presence at the back certainly assures us as a defensive unit. I would say there's only 1 space up for grabs at the moment in the back 5 and that's the CB next to O'Shea with no one really grabbing the shirt yet but we are starting to look fairly solid now as a back unit and actually O'Shea looked more assured coming out from the back than I've seen him recently. But from an attacking point of view, I thought we were pretty poor most of the match. Real lack of fluency and lots of poor performances. Clarke constantly runs into trouble and loses the ball. Nunez lost the ball too so many times and on the ball McAteer looks league 2 standard. I have to say the thing I did like about both Nunez and McAteer tonight was I thought positionally they were pretty good, they press well and both take up really good positions. Hirst is struggling but we're not playing to his strengths, for me he's never been the best with his back to goal and at the minute it looks a tough gig playing upfront in our team.
For prediction League reasons I'm frustrated Hull didn't score. But, league table reasons, a very positive result. Can't remember from the top of my head the last time we had 2 consecutive clean sheets
