I just read that Gyokeres did not recover in time for this game - neither did Havertz. Looks like Merino up front. Don't know about Odegaard, Madueke or Martinelli either.
Martinelli and Madueke on the bench at least. Bit more firepower to come on I suppose. interesting 5 at the back for spurs.
Something at least - but no Havertz, Gyokeres, Odegaard, Gabriel, Jesus. That's a massive hit with all of them out at the same time. Don;t feel good about this game at all.
Much needed bits of luck for both goals - but they were well worked and we deserve to be leading. Spurs must surely come out and play now - the hyper defensive , hit on the break and rugby moves are not working for them. Next goal is vital
Eze arrives Wrote himself into the history books. He was fantastic today. So were a few others I am still furious with Zubimendi. Droppable mistake.
Well, that was special, wasn't it? What an incredible win and performance from the lads. Phenomenal display. In my 30 years on this earth, that's definitely the most dominant and controlled display against Spurs I can remember seeing. We were hearing about how great their away record was heading into the game, and we just utterly outclassed/blitzed them. They set up to defend in a low block in a back 5, it was totally cowardly. From start to finish, we were a thousand times better than them - all over the pitch. They couldn't handle us. A few players I want to give a shoutout too. Eze yesterday showed why we bought him. He was electric. Not just his goals (which were all outstanding), but the pace he played with, the way he was finding pockets of space and always looking to hurt them, his nimble feet and dribbling, his combination play and rotations with Saka, Trossard and Merino. And who else would it have been to bag a hat trick against them lot ? Trossard - what a player. I thought we should have sold him in the Summer and it was time to move on, but he's proving me wrong this season. What a way to respond. Took his goal well and was a constant thorn in Spence's side. Lovely assist for Eze's hat trick too. Merino - despite his goalscoring instincts and good technique, I'm not a fan of the guy at CF because his all-round game isn't great. But he was superb yesterday. What an incredible pass for the opener and he played a part in the 4th goal too with his hold-up play, ability to turn away from defenders, occupy the CBs and lay it off to the wider runners. Fair play to Merino. Hincapie - his first league start with minimal rest due to him flying back on Wednesday after Ecuador's game, but he was fantastic in Gabriel's absence. Won his duels, was aggressive when he needed to be, so comfortable on the ball and stepped into midfield to help us push up/build-up from the back. What a player. I was gutted we conceded because Spurs didn't deserve a goal, and it was typical the goal we conceded was a 40-yard worldie from Pigeon boy, but that was the only minor blemish on what was a phenomenal weekend of football. Let's not forget this happened without 3 strikers, our club captain and our best defender. Martinelli didn't even come off the bench and Madueke was only on for about 15 minutes. That's the thing that excites me - there's still so much to look forward to with this team, we're not even at our best yet.
I have to admit I was slagging off Merino hard before that beautiful assist to Trossard. He really is that kind of player though - he can be absolutely useless but then produce a moment of absolute quality. I think Eze is going to go from strength to strength now. The Number 10 is going to be tough to decide for Arteta - I still think Odegaard is the more creative and the better passer but Eze is definitely more of a goal threat. Hincape was decent but I would still prefer us to pair Saliba with Mosquera whilst Gabriel is out.
I thought we were awful in the first 30 minutes - apart from an early spell where Rice had his chance. After that we were very impressive and looked like we'd score every time we went forward. Defensively we were sound again and that is very encouraging given that Gabriel was out (thought Saliba was immense and Hincapie held the fort brilliantly). Trossard ane Eze were superb. Saka very good. Rice was all over the pitch and his usual self. Timber and Califiori showed again the highest level of FB play. I have a downer on Zubimendi - I can't forgive an error like that. Still angry about him costing us a goal. He is regularly giving away possession in dangerous positions, either free kicks, poor passes or being dispossessed. It's not good enough and to me he sticks out like a sore thumb in this team as being below the rest. I could live with that if I saw him regularly progressing the ball upfield passing through the lines, but he doesn't do that either to anywhere near the extent Partey did. He simply takes the safe option time and time again. Merino is one of this player's that can make something happen, but I do get frustrated with his link play most of the time. Apart from the first 30 - I think this was the best we've looked this season. Perfect time for it - against the Spuds! The game against Chelsea is even more than a '6 pointer'. If we manage to beat them at their place then it really does set us up as big favourites to win the title - even this early in the season. we'd be a min of 7 pts clear at the top, which a host of players returning form injury... The rigging of the fixture list to try and derail us early has backfired very badly. I do think Chelsea are a serious threat, though.
