I may be thinking that because the deal was already done before Glasner put a stop to it at the last minute, that it was understood that because Guehi hasn't signed a new deal with Palace and will be going on a free in the summer anyway, that we had some sort of first refusal for January. Either that or I dreamt it all
Nope. He had agreed a contract, but that'll be null now. The sentiment at the time was that he'd move to us at the end of the season as we were the only ones bidding in Sept. But obviously since then Real has entered the chat, so it's down to what Guehi wants no agreements.
Can't see that being right, why would Palace pull the plug on a deal like that? They're going to lose him anyway. Equally, why would we pay £30m and wait until he'd have been able to join us for free anyway?
Eh? Palace pulled the plug cause the manager threatened to walk away as they didn't get the replacement. Who in an ironic turn can't get a game for West Ham. Palace accepted, when they stopped the transfer, they would probably lose him for nothing. They are gambling that with him they achieve more than they stand to miss out on. The Feeling (work better for you) after the collapse, was that as Geuhi had all but moved to us on deadline day we would be the only destination for him come Jan or even next summer, given he'd already said yes. There was however no official agreement between the two clubs or with the player. Real Madrid have since thrown an extra complication into that. Because we have no deal, of any kind, in place, imo unless we go back in Jan we are going to miss out on him as other clubs are now showing an interest where they weren't before.
nope. If we’d offered more, earlier, they would have had time to find a replacement. We thought he was overpriced with a year left and pushed it to the last. It didn’t work.
This is all speculation, surely? Honestly, I'm not really bothered anyway - I only contributed because there's nothing happening on here. I'm not even sure if I even want the guy - if he came to us I'd back him in the same way I try to with all our players, if he doesn't, then I'm sure we'll find someone else.
I thought that it was quite well documented that Palace wanted a figure that was too high for a player with one year left on his contract. We can’t moan (I know that you’re not) if we play the long game (probably justified) and it doesn’t come off. Neither can we moan if he doesn’t come to us because his options opened up. It’s all easy to state in hindsight but I had we bid the asking price at the beginning of the window, he’d be our man now. Anyway, I agree with you, we will find an alternative if necessary but do think that he’d be a great signing for how we play.
I'm not sure how you can know that there was no official agreement. The reports at the time said he was sitting waiting for his ride up to Liverpool having just completed his medical. It was all done bar the signing of a contract. I don't think Palace could let him have a medical without agreeing to it and I don't think Guehi would be having a medical had he not already agreed to the move. There was plenty of agreement until, like you said, Glasner stepped in because his replacement had fallen through. I was sort of under the impression from how far along the transfer had gone, that there was (maybe) an unofficial agreement for a January move.
Palace accepted a bid, at this point formal talks and medicals can begin with the player. However until both clubs agree to the transfer it doesn't happen. We had this with Fekir, everything was agreed until we got him to a medical and decided to pull the plug and didn't agree the transfer. As the selling club, you don't have to agree to any other agreements even if you decide to kibosh the deal. You are talking about a future transfer agreement, where the player will turn any approaches by another club ,or first refusal agreement, where Palace have to inform us of any bids and if we match ours has to be accepted. I can say for certain there is nothing Official as mentioned above between the clubs or Guehi There could be something unofficial with Guehi, but that wont be disclosed until he moves, so it's a yes/no situation.
