Well done the Scotland football team and the Wales team tonight With home grown managers as well. Unlike the England team.
(Some) Charlton fans will be disappointed to learn overnight that they will be denied the opportunity to see Campbell & Anderson at the World Cup next Summer, after Jamaica (ranked 170 in the world) very unfairly missed out on qualification to the mighty Curacao. FIFA obviously agrees, because they are have arranged a 6 nation “losers play off” tournament involving Jamaica and other giants including Costa Rica and Iraq, with a bonus place up for grabs.’ The Italy manager Gattuso was spot on the week when he pointed out how FIFA are devaluing this “elite” competition, expanding the opportunities for no hopers while Italy now looks set not to qualify & miss out.
Are Curacao going to the World Cup Finals then? I never even knew there was a Country called Curacao.
Used to be called Netherlands Antilles. Rude Gullit was born there. I'll put my quizzer head away ...
I guess you can only beat whoever is in front of you on the pitch. Or not, in the case of Italy and Jamaica.
Gattuso makes the point that Europe has by far the best and most competitive league structure in the world, and yet loses out by a ratio of 9 to 2 in terms of World Cup places to (cough) developing football nations. Let’s be honest …the quality just is not there, and it’s just going to lead to a lot of boring mid matches next Summer at what should be an elite tournament.
My Dad used to Play for Sliema in Malta. But he never played for the National team. Malta come up with the occasional good result but they are not consistent. The pool of players they can choose from is tiny.
Clubs get a decent amount from FIFA for their players at the World Cup. I can't find the figures for the last one but for the 2018 tournament Hull received just short of 650k. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
