Can someone explain how a players “wages” are established? For me a wage is the amount an employer pays directly to an employee. Is the “wage” the total cost to the club for employing a player or is it the cash paid direct? Even in so called amateur levels where no “wages” are allowed, housing and cars are often provided as part of the deal. Are bonuses such as starts, goals and promotions included? It may be naive of me but, this muddies the water when I look at professional players income and I have a genuine reason for asking. I get that bonuses will be on top. The real question is, if a player is said to be earning 30k per week, how much is in actual cash paid into his bank?
If a player is said to be earning 30k a week it'll be gross of tax I would think. No one quotes their wage net of tax. Any goal/CS bonuses would be on top.
The top players make most their money from stuff like image rights and sponsorship deals. Don’t know how that changes as you move down the ladder but as you note there’s a lot more goes on that just basic wages.
