I'll take that point, it was more than I was expecting - I honestly think Crawley are a lot better than their league position suggests. That's the trouble with this league this season, don't take anyone for granted, there are no easy games.
Could have been 5 each today thought Crawley were the best attacking side to come to Preistfield this season. 1 Jake Turner some outstanding saves. 2 Bradley Dack great goal some good passes to set us up and defended well at times. 3 Gareth McCleary great pace and looked dangerous at times.
1. Jake Turner's face.... and other parts of his anatomy - saved Gills ! 2. Gale - great first half - only other Gills player who coped with the Crawley 'press.' 3. Dack - quality goal - pity it's all too rare an occurrence. Crawley were the latest 'lowly' side who exposed the fact that the Gills fullbacks are too easy to go past - causing the need for opposing wingers to have too much time & space to put in crosses - which always lead to goals...... It doesn't help when you let opposing midfield runners take the ball 40, 50 ,60 yards without being challenged.... and, of course when you have forwards who simply can't find the net -- other than that, it was a lively game , where both teams could / should have scored more. The result was fair - but - Gills were very lucky not to go in at half time about 2 or 3 goals down...... Second half was fairly decent - but - we don't do well without the ball !
A draw was the least Crawley deserved from that game, and but for Turner, some bad luck (our penalty was harsh in the extreme), and some poor finishing they would have won. Another game where I don't think any of our players were poor but none were that good either, we look like a mid table team and thats where we ae heading. In matches like this we miss Nevitt his finishing maybe below the required standard but defenders get far less time on the ball when he plays. 1. Turner 2. Dack 3. Gale There were good signs from Macauley too but he made the wrong decision on a couple of occasions which I put down to a lack of game time recently, I hope he gets up to speed as he could be an asset.
My top three will be much the same as everyone elses. I wasn't comfortable at the beginning of the game with the whole of our back line up on the edge of their penalty area, which nearly gifted them an early goal. I get your defenders generally have the stength and power to create goals, need to look non further than players such as Harry Maguire for that, but when the opportunity did come later in the day, Sam would have had more chance in hitting Santa than the back of the net. We got lucky, again! Crawley deserved no less than all three points, what I can't work out is Crawley a play-off chasing side, just in the wrong position of the league at the moment, or are we just that bad? I enjoyed watching Crawley, just wished it wasn't against my own team. We need strikers, proper strikers badly, someone who is just a natural at finding the net, yet we've not had anyone like that for years. Tom Eaves was he the last half decent one we had? I'll shut up now... 1. Turner 2. Dack 3. Clark
