On the " gave up half way through" line. Very doid line anarl.

A canny few years ago, that lot were playing in a CL game. Probably the first time.

I went into a workshop and the lads had a radio on. Talk sport was playing and in honour of the match upcoming, Freddie Sheppard was lined up for an interview with a character called Mike Parry, a bloke who likes to make a noise for a reaction. In the morning this was, maybe half eight or so.

Parry. " Well Freddie, a great night coming up"

Sheppard. " Yes, we've worked hard towards this, blah...blah."

Parry. "And the atmosphere should be great at St James Park. It's a great ground, I've been there myself. It's going to look great when it's all finished".

    Sheppard. " It is finished".

Cue a tailed off interview. Fantastic, and confirms the " gave up half way through" impression.

Bang on. When we were looking to move from Roker we looked at loads of sites before coming up with the A19 site, which ultimately fell through. If I remember right, Silksworth, Herrington, Penshaw, Cleadon and Doxford Park were areas looked at and rejected for various reasons until they settled on Nissan. Those stadium plans were brought out in 1993 after about a year of rumours with the stadium due to open in 1995. I remember seeing the clubs proposal for the "Wembley of the north" when they put stuff out about including stuff about feasibility studies. I think it said it had been about a years work from a initial ideas, identifying sites, conducting feasibility studies, getting designs etc before coming out with it. With all the disputes and objections, especially from Nissan, it was called in for a public enquiry and ultimately it fell through. But in the meantime those delays allowed a better site to come available.

By luck (if you look at it that way) Wearmouth colliery closed and the site became available, which is better than the ones previously looked at. If it hadn't and we'd stayed at Roker I can bet now we'd have looked at building on Vaux and maybe be on site now.

Its not just the results and performances. They absolutely hate the fact we're being talked about in all areas of the media, and getting such positive attention. They want it all for themselves , as they have had so much smoke blown up their arses. Its grating on them, and they do not like it!!

In the spirit of enquirey, PLEASE correct me where I have it weong.

It seems that The Freemen of the City of Newcastle are not the same as those who have been honoured with the Freedom of Newcastle.
This second catagory currently includes Meesrs Shearer and Howe for example and they are Honorary Freemen. (A sort of non-voting member:emoticon-0100-smile).

It seems that anybody can apply to become a Freeman providing they qualify, but I have not managed to find out just what the rules are.
The best I have come up with is that Bastards are NOT eligable!!!

And this is my todays -- 'new thing learned':emoticon-0104-surpr

And, no doubt, the Saudis believe they can just appropriate the land and do whatever they like with it …

… I’m certain that’s how things work over there, then the dispensable foreign workers are brought in, etc.

But, don’t worry, the Premier League were given legally binding assurances so it’ll all be fine <whistle>

    15th November 2025

A community group has complained the return of a Christmas light show makes a city centre park "inaccessible".

Northern Lights, in Leazes Park, Newcastle, draws thousands of visitors and is about to enter its third year, but blocks off a large part the park from 15:00 GMT each day from the end of November until the New Year.

Marion Williams, chair of Friends of Leazes Park, said the group was frustrated the public space was closed for so long …..

Just shows that if this person gets upset about the park being closed just for one month then there's no way in hell that they're gonna get permission to build anywhere in the city. They'll be objections flying in from all over the place.

For one month for something that isn't 100% against the sprit of a public park!

Unlike building a stadium and all the infrastructure that goes with it .

We've been to the Northern Lights thing a couple of years ago.

I can understand the frustrations by the lady from the community group. There was loud music playing, mess and smells from the food stands and the grass was churned up in places. The impact on the local residents and wildlife must be difficult.

I did take this lovely picture of me and the bairn having a beautiful moment of mother/daughter bonding though. Click on the spoiler button to see it.

Looks like Valley Parade - built 2 big stands when they were in the PL, then gave up. Bradford have a stadium that looks at home in the PL AND L2

To be fair to Bradford, they ran out of money when they got relegated from the EPL and ended up in administration a couple of years later, so that's probably why it's never been finished.

I've never been to Valley Parade but from what I remember being told the grounds built on a hillside, so the cost of building new stands are probably a bit higher than other grounds. And they don't own the ground, it's owned by the family that own Flamingoland who might be a bit more awkward about redevelopment. All in all they have a reason for it looking half finished, the mags don't.

Edit. I looked it up. Valley Parade is owned by the pension fund of the bloke who owns Flamingoland, so it might be even more complicated!

Just depends on where you're facing. It's like when they skunks are on the telly and they always pan to the multistorey but never the little stand.

Carlisle's ground is weird. They built a long new stand with a view to moving the pitch along a bit and then building bigger end stands. Only they ran out of money and never completed it. We were in the end of the new stand where the building with the white roof is. If I stood and looked directly forwards, I would have been looking at the end terrace rather than the pitch!
