Been googling for the answer to this.
Can’t find a higher one than City v Rotherham 1948. Just under 50000. Does anyone know of an attendance higher?

How good would it be to be in a crowd that size in Hull. Time moves on and those days are long gone sadly.

    Yes it would .
Things changed in the late 60s .
People started latching onto the bigger clubs and it wasn't just Hull .
Not sure why maybe it was more people watching them on TV more especially with MOTD becoming more popular along with more people having a TV

Sounds about right when you put it that way. Local teams used to get much bigger attendances. Way of the world now. Think I’ll stick to HCFC like my Dad and Son now.

Do you mean in the third tier ever, or specifically the old third division as it was called before the Premier League existed?

Sunderland claim to have broken the third tier record when they were down there a few years ago, if that's what you're referring to.

The Rotherham game was frequently cited as the biggest attendance in the 3rd division. The Sunderland gate is usually labelled the highest third tier attendance in the modern era but was well behind. I've just checked and there were much higher numbers than either in the 1930s. The best league gate I've been in at Boothferry park was the game against Millwall with 40000 plus. City won 1 - 0. The cup game (6th round replay) against Chelsea was similar but had a much better atmosphere - City lost 1-3 though.

It has been discussed before but we sold 55,000 tickets for that game (there were over 70,000 applications) but a transport strike on the day meant only (only!) just under 50,000 went to the game. Can you imagine that many turning up now if they had to walk or cycle on Christmas Day,hardly anyone had cars then, as people find it difficult coming by bus if it isn’t a 3 pm Saturday kick off.
Cardiff City have a similar discrepancy as some records show them having 52,000 around the same season or the one before but others show 49,000. Ours is higher than the oft quoted highest for a third tier match between the fowls and the Blunts as is Cardiff’s.
