I believe it's down to their poor standings in the polls. Starmer needs to deliver something in the next year.

I think the time has come for a serious conversation abou the size of the state. Take welfare. Is the NHS really suitable in its current form. I would like a serious assessment into whether something like the Dutch model is more appropriate. It still provides access for all, but is means tested. Savings could be significant. Then as others have said - quangos. I suspect 25% could be shut and we wouldnt notice. It is a terrible mess. I have shared stories about the state of primary school funding. It is heartbreaking. Politicians of all colours need to accept the need we have and committ to policies that will give out kids and grandkids a chance not me and you mate. We have had our time.

It's likely some of the Lords who would lose their position may be holding things up mind. I certainly wouldn't put it past them.
i always admit to having little interest in politics, apart from having a vote there is really feck all i can do to change things and as i have grown older i find even that single vote means nothing but i have noticed a lot of things changing. i mean, we used to be able to afford the NHS along with a fully manned set of forces (police, military, fire etc) yet all have been stripped down, supposedly to save 'millions' yet every new election brings the same tales of woe. we used to have time served people promoted up 'the ranks' and they knew everything about the job yet now we see these graduates getting such jobs who then need to hire a couple of people under them to actually run the job, as this continues we find them at the top, but then they need more to help them such as the 'lowly' secretary (you know her, she is the only one who knows what is going on and when), we see an increasing amount taking on a business then have to hire others on minimum wage to keep the job going while they claim a 6 figure salary for doing nothing. would it be so hard to just 'rewind' and do whatever we did 40 or 50 years ago when things just simply ran properly and were ran by those who knew the job...or have i missed far too much out?
Well at least Starmer got the benefit of one after his beer and curry party in Durham during lockdown! But as always, we'll see.

You last paragraph poses the right question. But bureaucracies have their own life. They often attract people who are singularly useless for any real work . The money they "earn" is usually way ahead of anything they could hope to attract in a competitive, commercial world. So, their job is to keep their job. The best way to do that is to appoint people under you, and when they can, they will do the same. In very short form, that is the plague which infests every institution in the country. And when any cuts are made, which is very rare, these people make absolutely sure that the effect is the most public, the most eye catching, the most sympathy gathering. Never their superannuated lifestyles and gold plated pensions.
