It was always a bit of a holiday going to Fulham in the 70's and 80's as opposed to the likes of Spurs, Chelsea, Millwall, etc. I only remember a half time punch up, underneath the away terraces when that end used to be split 50/50. We had some good days out there with decent pubs around Putney Bridge like the Temperance, our default. In more recent times we met up there with Dave Ashfield, author of Relentless Misery the Sunderland book, who was in there with his sons. He was also there with dozens of home made pies, stotties and roll mop herrings for the lads ... it all sent the police sniffer dogs into a bit of a frenzy Thinking back brings up other visits with Jimmy Hill, Marangoni and the Boat Race going past springing to mind ... ... I'm gutted I can't make it this time but hope everyone going sees some more great Sunderland goals, enjoys being in more great away support and sings all the way home, safe journey and enjoy the day.
Last time I was at Craven Cottage was the Baxter era, it was a Bank holiday Easter weekend. Down on a John Tennick coach, got there early enough to go to Highbury in the afternoon ( our KO was 7.30)....Arsenal were playing Liverpool and John Toshack scored a great header from an Arsenal corner but it was in his own net. Our match was a typical Sunderland game went a goal down, Baxter turned the game after HT and we went 2-1 up only to lose 3-2 late on. Coaches didn't leave til 11pm which left enough time for a group of us to be set on by the Fulham faithful, before it got out of hand a bigger group of Chelsea fans came to our rescue and waited with us til the coaches turned up ( can you imagine that happening in the days Chelsea had a bad reputation). Hope all goes well for those attending just hope Reggie doesn't allow the lads to underestimate Fulham.
Yeah me too, it's a long time ago but I think Bobby Moore played as well ... ... he was trying to flog some jewellery in the car park after the match.
I've no idea mate. One of our lads remembers the details of every match we went to ... ... I only remember the scrapes we got into, pubs we fought our way out of and the odd goal we saw from the wrong section of the ground
At half time we went downstairs, onto the concourse, and Fulham were on the other side of a big metal panel. They started kicking it and shouting the odds. The Peterlee lads barged past the stewards, took the bolts off and opened the gate ... ... Fulham stopped dead in their tracks, looked over and ran
I know this is random marra, but can you remember a lad who was always at away matches called “Evo” seemed always dressed in a sheepskin coat, allegedly with a certain brand of glue in a inside pocket , just remembered seeing him that day on a park bench getting high
Yes I do remember him but never knew who he travelled with. There were some absolutely great characters like him. We had someone latch onto us who'd be picked up near Nottingham and travel down to southern games. I never knew who the fiick he was but we called him The Scuttler. We'd get to West Ham or wherever, he'd jump out of the car and say 'See you later'. We'd see him in the ground, or the pub, and he'd have blood on his knuckles and a few bruises ... 'Just scuttled a few of their lads!' We had another lunatic who'd run on the pitch, on the final whistle, no matter what had happened ... ... neither of them made it back to the car more than once every couple of games.
Aye exactly mate, never knew where abouts he came from, never seen him at train stations or motorway parks but was always around the grounds usually with another lad, some characters around then
