One afternoon, a young boy came home from school earlier than usual. Wanting to surprise his mom, he quietly tiptoed through the hallway — and accidentally ended up hiding in the hall closet when he heard her coming.

A moment later, someone else hurriedly ducked into the same closet — it was his mom’s friend, trying to avoid being seen.

In the dark, the boy whispered, “It’s dark in here.”
Startled, the man whispered back, “Uh… yes, it is.”

The boy said, “I’ve got a football.”
“That’s… great,” the man replied nervously.
“Wanna buy it?” the boy asked.
    The man sighed. “No, thanks.”
“My dad’s right outside,” the boy added casually.
“…Fine,” the man whispered. “How much?”
    “£100,” the boy said.

The man handed over the money, and the boy slipped out of the closet like nothing happened.

A week later, the boy once again found himself sharing the same dark closet with the same man.
“It’s dark in here,” the boy whispered.
“Yes, it is,” came the weary reply.
“I’ve got football boots this time,” the boy said.
    The man groaned. “How much?”
    “£500,” the boy replied.

The man sighed and paid up.

A few days later, the boy’s dad said, “Come on, son — grab your football and boots, let’s play!”
“I can’t,” said the boy. “I sold them.”
“You what?!” his dad exclaimed. “For how much?”
    “£600!” the boy said proudly.

His dad was astonished. “That’s not fair to your friend! You’re coming with me — we’re going to church, and you’re going to confess.”

So they went to church. The dad put his son in the confessional booth and shut the door.

In the dark, the boy whispered, “It’s dark in here.”
And a voice said, “Not you again! This is my closet!”
