O'Neil isn't after the job. He scored well on some KPIs and probably got some good references when the club were identifying potential coaches. He would've been one of those you'd ordinarily speak to but as of tonight, Saints haven't reached out to him and he hasn't reached out to Saints
Clough did ok at Forest after Derby. But then GON is not Brian Howard Clough. It’s a no for me. When Redknap came he was a big name and a good manager, I can see the rationale there.
I can't see any experienced, proven manager taking the job. Gary O'Neil is probably in the right profile group. We have a poor squad consisting of a handful of players that would possibly cut it in the Premier league. Goalkeepers zero Defenders Roerslev - experienced. Jelert - showing potential. Midfielders Scienza - definitely. Jander - showing potential. Charles - showing potential. Attackers Robinson - showing potential. We need another dozen players to compete in the prem. If we get lucky and get a few results in December, we might have a shout at the playoffs. Then it would need 5 in during the January window and if we were promoted, another 5+ in the summer. I don't see this happening in any shape or form. We are a season away regarding recruitment and team building.
You mean Stephen’s or Solak? Either way, it’s so easy to nudge someone with a media connection & request no link back to me.
I cannot see O' Neill becoming manager. Not all at likely. I agree with the comment about the squad. It is not as good as many people think in here.
For Edwards to have been stood down by Boro for their game today, I'm assuming that he wants the move to Wolves. I do think that GON is more likely to end up at Boro than here.
Nah. He's been coming in and out of odds on over the past few days, which shows it's just bits of money going in on him, not that anyone 'knows' anything.
Doesn't make sense after what DTLW has said, I actually don’t think the interviewing stage is over yet.
As long as O'Neill gives his all if he becomes manager then so be it. It's better than gambling on someone with no experience of this league. If he does well fans will probably forgive his Pompey links and he has managed in Premiership too.
I think it's as likely we carry on with Tonda a little while longer than we expect to, and take a bit of time to see how the picture unfolds. It's a bit fishing in the shallow pool at the moment in terms of managers, and we'll have Boro joining us in that soon too. We'll probably appoint someone (unless Tonda turns out to be a Poch regen), but it may not be before the international break etc. through paucity of choice.
Just to add to that, Tonda probably isn't ideal for any extended period, but I'd rather do that than rush into something and screw it up again. We slightly rushed to get Still, which stopped us from being able to get Röhl (for good reasons as we did need to move on someone), but if we can pull together results under Tonda, and it takes until January to get the right person on board, then so be it.
The international break essentially starts at the final whistle so we definitely won't appoint anyone before the break. I do think it would a wasted opportunity if we don't hire someone during this 2 week break. That at least gives them time to see the squad and get over their ideas.
Yes and no. I'd rather we didn't as I mentioned in the second post, than get into the mindset of "we have to do it in this break" and then hire a dud again.
