Who Could Be the Next Manager

What did he achieve at Wolves? They were top half before him weren't they?

 

Look at them before he took over. Thrashed 9-0 at Anfield.

 

What has anyone achieved there lately?

 

Kept them up (and pretty comfortably) from a pretty dire position.

 

I'd prefer a proven winner in the dugout personally.

For me ideal traits would be:

- Championship experience

- Has managed a club with expectations of winning most weeks

- Big personality

 

They still sacked him when they were in the relegation zone.

 

Finished 13th the year before he took over.

 

O'Neil, from a footballing standpoint is what fans have been calling for. Knows the league, managed in the PL (got Wolves comfortably mid table after a disastrous start). His Pompey links would be a big issue for some though, understandably.

Fans will complain about an unknown manager from another league....or appointing O'Neil.

 

He's not managed in the championship has he?

 

I'd add that i'd prefer someone with a bit more than 100 games as a manager, O'Neil is still learning I would say.

 

Looking at his record in detail I think the biggest concern from a footballing standpoint is that he's only managed 'underdog' teams so has no experience of being expected to win most weeks.

Similar to Still in that respect.

 

Agree with the second two points, not so bothered by the first.

O'Neil's odds have drifted slightly, if anyone thinks it's worth paying attention to that stuff.

 

Can’t think of anyone who ticks all three tbh. O’Neil doesn’t strike me as a big personality but I’ve probably only watched a handful of interviews from him. He hasn’t managed in the Champ or has experience managing a side that expects to win most weeks. So potentially 0/3

Very unlikely we find anyone who ticks all three, think the personality is the key one for me

 

Would also add that if you want “Champ experience” and “expected to win most weeks” then you likely are looking at someone who has failed in the Champ and manages/managed a larger lower league team

 

Yeah that's an ideal list, in order of priority it'd probably be bottom to top.

Should be able to get at least two of those though.

 

Based on your criteria I think Carrick seems like a good candidate, ticks at least 1 and a half if the boxes (not sure Boro were expected to win every week when he was there, but higher expectations than just being a middling club as well). Not sure on his personality either but his playing career should be enough to command respect from the squad

 

And now they want him back. Which is pretty telling.
