Peter’s dad had a pub in Croydon And the Seven Stars outside the High Court. I can tell you now not many bar snacks where left when Peter used to be in
My favourite team is from the 97/98 campaign, obviously culminating in the legendary play-off win over Sunderland. Super Clive, Kinsella, Jones (both), Rufus et al. Curbs put together a superb unit that year. Great memories.
I think I mentioned before that I know someone who played Sunday morning football with him for a Bromley pub team …PG was advised on multiple occasions up until recently to stop.
Same for me. My first game was Boxing Day 1997, a 2-1 win vs Norwich. I didn't grow up in London and we were here visiting family for Christmas. My Uncle took me as my Old Man isn't into football and I was hooked immediately. Part of my reason for moving to London after University was to be able to get to more games. So that 97-98 team brings it all back.
I really started getting into Charlton during the mid to late 80s, so Messrs Leaburn, Lee, Peake, Gritty and Minto were early heroes. I wrote to Lennie one year and received a lovely letter in return, which I still have somewhere, along with a sheet with the whole team's autographs on it. Contained in the letter was a Paul Miller Sportswear and Equipment catalogue. Ha!
Despite the stadium chaos, the mid to late 80s & early 90s were a good time to support us. I was a near ever present in that era H&A. Happy times.
Didn't we get Sasa from a team in Sussex? It may have been St. Leonard's... Steve Brown was a colossus. I remember he scored a belter at home to Bradford in a 4-1 win. That sticks in my mind because I'd spent the night in the nick after fighting in Enfield Town. I got to my seat just as the match kicked off. Morts was magic that day, as was Super Clive.
98 play off is one of my most cherished games didn’t get home until early hours after being locked in the Oak
My vague memories of Les Berry, Leroy Ambrose, Flanagan, Walsh and Powell and a Valley that was huge always are the most joyous
That’s when I went for the first time , with my dear old dad - he didn’t get to see us in the prem as he was too ill to attend and sadly passed. So glad he introduced me to the valley
