Yeah, I get free prescriptions via the GP, but not from direct from the pharmacy. I expected to pay for the meds but was surprised that there was a consultation fee.

I'd be surprised too. Why would you go to a pharmacy and pay for the consultation when you can get the same from your GP for free! When people realise this they will wait for the GP albeit three weeks later, by which time your ailment will have cleared. The NHS is totally broken.

According to my various search engines and AI helpers you’ve been ripped off - Pharmacy First should be free consultation and prescriptions if you are exempt. Only pay for over the counter medicines.

I wonder if you're supposed to contact the GP first and that they then refer you to a pharmacy.

    Edit:

Just looked it up and, no, you don't have to contact a GP. Which I suppose is the whole point.

    Further reserach shows...

    Accessing Pharmacy First services
The following table shows the 7 conditions pharmacists can manage across various age ranges.

    Clinical pathway Age range
Acute otitis media* 1 to 17 years
    Impetigo 1 year and over
Infected insect bites 1 year and over
    Shingles 18 years and over
    Sinusitis 12 years and over
Sore throat 5 years and over
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections Women 16-64 years

So it seems that ear infections only qualify for under-18s.

I really should have asked some questions while I was there.
