No thanks, the thought of another possession obsessed manager terrifies me.

Plus, rightly or wrongly his skate connections means he wouldn't have a large portion of fans on board right from the off which isn't what we need right now.

I do think he's a good manager but surely a non starter for us.

10 years ago he'd have been great but he is past it sadly. He retired at Boro and then even after coming back to Huddersfield, he left after 1 season to take time out from the game, presumably because it was too much for an almost 80 year old to handle... fair enough!

I think he spends more time on the golf course than watching about football these days!

Good point on your last paragraph, would be like how Jones started with us.

That's because we have been too light in DM/CM/AM because of 5 at the back.

I genuinely think the fact he’s ex Pompey wouldn’t really matter that much , but that’s just my opinion .

Yeah it's not ideal in that sense and I think it would mean writing off our chances of promotion, but I think he'd be capable of achieving the culture shift needed still and he said he was open to the Wednesday job in the summer so clearly still thinks about management.

Just why didn’t we appoint a manager who preferred 4 at the back <whistle>

Yep, I’ve no trust SR will make a good appointment. That said, there’s some comical names on there.

I really think it would mate, not for everybody of course but there'd be plenty who wouldn't want him at all and would jump all over him as soon as he struggled.

We need somebody who's going to unite the fanbase as much as possible and an ex skate isn't going to do that.

Have read that Rosenior is the one SR would like, but there is no chance he’ll come here from France.

    Fair comment .
As I have said before I moved to Southampton when I was 8 and have never really understood the bitter hatred .
Banter and one upmanship of course , but hatred , no .

I never even thought about the Skates until I left school and went on a boatbuilding training course and met a few of them, although there were some amusing songs about them sung at the Dell.
It was the first time i was called a Scummer and a lot of bitterness came from them, they were in the old Div 4 and we were getting promoted to the top division.
Then I went to a game at Fratton with a Northampton fan and stood in their end and virtually every song was about Saints and not even remotely amusing.
So my conclusion was that it was born out of sheer envy and our fanbase has just responded in kind over the years.

The ones who are out of work and I think we could realistically get after are names like: Carrick, Wagner, O’Neil, Gerrard

If you want a realistic name who is already in a job I’ll offer Dave Challinor at Stockport

And if you want a name who is already in a Championship job and there’s a chance of persuading then I’d offer up Alex Neil at Millwall

However, I could well see it being a German/Central European coach we’re not even mentioning

On the topic of Germans, it’s a shame that Leeds have started competently enough because I’d take Daniel Farke in the parallel universe where he didn’t make it beyond the end of October at Elland Road

For me I do think someone with Championship experience is pretty vital.

I first looked this this up the other day, and the top 50 Championship managers over the past 25 years, as based on their points per game in this record, are (minimum of 25 Championship games):

    1. Managers currently in the Championship (or lower): McKenna (5th), Lampard (13th), Wilder (22nd), Sheehan (28th), Edwards (46th)

    2. Managers currently in the PL: Nuno (2nd), Maresca (3rd), Silva (6th), Parker (7th), Farke (8th), Dyche (15th), Frank (17th), Le Regis (24th), Howe (35th)

    3. Managers currently abroad: Kompany (1st), Benitez (4th), Bielsa (9th), Cooper (14th), Jokanovic (21st), Munoz (25th), McClaren (31st), Corberan (37th), Poyet (42nd), Sannino (44th), Dean Smith (47th)

    4. Managers currently unemployed (but have been employed in the past five years): Allardyce (10th), Hughton (16th), Bilic (19th), Bruce (23rd), Carvahal (27th), Carrick (29th), McCarthy (30th), Martin (32nd), Warnock (34th), Karanka (36th), Garcia (39th), Tindall (40th), Wagner (43rd), Blackwell (50th)

    5. Managers currently unemployed (and have not been employed in the past five years): Coppell (11th), Di Matteo (12th), McLeish (18th), Davies (20th), Keane (33rd), McDermott (38th), Royle (41st), Hoddle (45th), Redk*app (48th), Pulis (49th)

*When I say "unemployed", I mean in the sense that they are not currently a manager. Some people on these lists are of course employed in a different coaching capacity - eg Tindall is Howe's assistant at Newcastle, and Wagner heads up the youth team at Leipzig.

I'm not intending this list to be evidence that X is better than Y. It's more just a simple case of naming names, particularly because I am really struggling to form a decent list. One name missing from above is Sven (RIP) at 26th. There are seven managers above whose Championship experience consists of one full season, in which they got promoted (Nuno, Maresca, Silva, Le Regis, Kompany, Benitez, Allardyce) and they have never been back since. There are four other managers who have also been promoted in their only full Championship season (McKenna, Bilic, Di Matteo, McLeish) but have since returned to the Championship for a partial second season. That is this season in McKenna's case, so that might yet turn into a full second season.

The managers in the fifth category can be excluded, because essentially they have retired. The managers in the second category can be excluded, because they're never leaving their PL job to join us - something which also applies to some other managers above too.

If there are any names on this list who you are unfamiliar with, then the chances are they were one of the 2million managers appointed by Watford at some point.

Other notable, current, names include: Rodgers (51st), Ismael (52nd), Rowett (56th), Rosenior (58th), Neil (64th), Mowbray (66th), Heckingbottom (72nd) and Jones (85th).

I liked Rosenoir, mainly based on some footage of when they beat us I think. like someone said, probably won't want to leave France for our **** show.

I mentioned him on here before he went to France, some on here rubbished the idea.
He definitely wouldn’t come here ATM.

Neil is near the top of my last. Would definitely prefer him to Carrick.

But I agree that it'll be someone we've never heard of.

I had Carrick as my preference only because I doubted Neil would come. Money talks thought I suppose so I suppose it wouldn't be a ridiculous option.
