For a bricklayers labour who couldn't trap a back of cement when turned down by Goole Town and Brid Town he didn't do bad for himself as a professional footballer, thanks to Hull City giving him a break. He scored over 70 goals in his career and played in the First Division ( Premier League) for Newcastle Utd who paid over £200k for him. Bet no-one has ever said he was never a good striker, average at best and a bit of a joke to his face.
How many other 'joke' strikers can you name who scored over 70 professional goals? In his prime Billy Whitehurst would be the first name on most clubs team sheet.
Too young to have seen big bad Billy but he is a fabled hero from what my dad would tell me. One of the goats.
At an average of better than a goal every five games oh for a few more less than decent strikers in our history.
When he first came he was awful, but was loved straight away because he ran his heart out, and chased lost causes, unlike many at the time.
Billy W was a handful for defences. Played for City when I was a young un, up town, out with the lads and for the first time following a winning team home and away. Was he great, no of course not. Was he good, yeah for a couple of seasons. Scored 20 in one season. We see as we find but I loved the bloke leading the line of my team.
Looking at the latest scores I think Liverpool would take him now( obviously tongue in cheek comment).
