Much in the same way Man Utd and Man City are currently out of the CL, I'm not assessing teams based on performances this season. I'm basing it on a mixture of the ability of the club, the quality of the players, the size of the club and the history. After all, the bigger the clubs, the more prestigous it will be.

As for Atlethic Bilbao, they finished 6th in La Liga last season. Considering the domination of that league by Real Madrid and Barca, I don't think teams that low in the league should get a pop at the Europa League. In that league, I'd say the top 3 should be CL spots, whilst the 4th and 5th spots are Europa.

The fact that they topped their group isn't a big deal based on the current EL model, because their competition (Red Bull Salzburg and Slovan Bratislava inparticular) are absolute ****e. Drop all the **** out of each group and get each team facing quality teams, and then we'll see who can cut it. It would be a lot more difficult without those very poor teams to pick easy 3 points from.

The thing that I hate about the Europa League is that teams like ManU and City who've failed the CL get to play in the KO stages and won't probably be fielding their best teams anyway. Hence the argument that they raise the profile of the competition is complete bollocks. In fact teams like Shamrock Rovers and Rangers that fail to get to the group stages of CL qualify directly for the play-off round of the Europa League .
And to give the competition more appeal maybe the 4 teams that make it to the semi finals should be eligible to play in the last qualifying round of the CL ...

The Champions League would be awful and nowhere near as lucrative if runners-up were forbidden from entering. The Europa League would definitely become the better competition due to more higher quality teams in it, meaning clubs would be encouraged to finish second in order to be able to win the most prestigious competition in Europe. Pointless.
