Totally different standard and I think he wanted the change anyway. Great servant for us, but I'm not convinced he would have been that effective in another PL season. But there again I look at Odobert, Tel etc and wonder ....
If he wanted to retain starting XI form with WC 2026 in mind, you could at least offer guaranteed starts in 8 CL games, and then more sparingly in the domestic campaigns. Dunno what money he gets in the USA (might be some serious pension fund filling) .
It wasn't. He was finished at the highest level and I think he knew it. Not replacing him was the great stupidity.
