First three posts in this new thread were moved from another thread... Rwanda is a fabulous place to visit, provided you stay in decent hotels and only venture beyond the city limits with official guardians. Hospitality is incredible, even from the villagers who have very little to offer. I bought footballs and gave them to the nippers, who beamed the brightest smiles. The wildlife is spectacular and well worth all the usual travel hassles.
There is plenty of cheap accommodation in Kigali, but it is often dirty, unsafe and prone to room theft. Try to get something that is at least four stars and with a safe in the room. The same goes with food. Try to eat in proper establishments rather than the makeshift eateries. There are far cheaper African countries than Rwanda, but few have such natural beauty.
This was the original thread starting post before the three above were moved in... For all (including Elf’s) to share hint tips places to go , places to visit etc…
I am going to enjoy this thread, where do you want to go? I have been to 34 of the 195 countries so relatively inexperienced. Ooops, make it 35, I forgot South East London
I've been to the Outer Hebrides. Cold, windswept, beautiful. I have no sea legs though, and the weather was stormy on the way over
I went to Aviemore two weeks back. The Cairngorms were absolutely fabulous. I got it with perfect weather tho - t-shirt and ice cream mid October. Last week I was in Nice, South of France. My first time - enjoyed it but was surprised how unimpressive Monaco is
My midlife crisis is kicking in - I’m trying to fit in as much travel as I can. Last year I went to Namibia, first time to Africa. Amazing trip and country. I now want to do more of Africa hence my interest in Rwanda
I went to Belgrade in May (actually flew the evening of the Play off final, I was glad we didn't need extra time and pens!) Very interesting city, really friendly people, good food and beer! Only negative for me (may be a positive for others) they haven't banned smoking indoors, May was a good time to go as we could eat/drink outside, might not be ideal for winter trips
Had a month in Malaysia 8 years ago, the highlight was a week in Borneo. Incredible wildlife, including a mother and baby orang-utan. Just missed a herd of pygmy elephants. Madeira is beautiful if you have a head for heights. We stick more to the UK these days. When the kids were little we went to the Scilly Isles every second year. Not many people know how beautiful they are.
