Reminds me of our experience with Chris Wood (the NZ player who has done well elsewhere since). Actually does well leading the line and causing the CBs problems …. But can’t effing score. I guess there’s quite a few like that.
This was one of the Bamford arguments during the Bielsa era. The modern game has changed so much from when I was a kid in the 90s where you had strikers who could score 20 - 30 goals like Zola or Yorke now people don't expect them to socre it's about your 'keep up' play and leading the line and your goals come from every where in gthe pitch. Probably why nobody uses 442 anymore unless your Dyche.
Formations under Farke? A moot point as it’s usually the same. He refuses to play 3 CBS even when short of forward and wing options. He refuses to play 4-4-2. He decided that maybe Aaronson and Harrison were having mares but left it too late. He replaced them with another 2 centre forwards so we had 3 nines on the pitch…..
I guess the exception to that assertion is Erling Haaland, who is barely involved in the game but for his goal scoring, ironically for Pep who all but “invented” the false 9 that everyone started to copy (or at least was a real devotee to it).
Wonder how Nuno is feeling having 2 midweek games, seems a tad unfair to me? No training tomoz for the team just warm down and massage etc, full training Wed and a bit Thu morning before flying up north ready for Friday. We really got to win this
I think this is the 2nd part of the argument. The last 30 years let's say since Wenger joined Arsenal and Gulllet became Chelsea manager there's been a larger influx of none english managers mainly from Europe and it's changing formations and tactics that you can have wingers scoring 25 goals a season like Salah or Mbeumo or Gakpo getting high teens. You look at the top 10 scores this season 50% of them are wingers or CM. The 3rd highest scorer this season so far is Jaidon Anthony at Burney while the 2nd is Semenyo
For what it's worth my opinion in Farke is he is doing the best he can. Two games this season we got unlucky and could have had more points. Then things would be oh poor farke just unlucky with injuries but he is doing great. Do me a great big effing favour he was forced to play Aaronson and harrison simply because they have hung around for the big wages. They are not prem players and also Meslier is on the big bucks too. Bamford had to be paid off too so i think the 49ers are being truthful about our budget. Git rid of the deadwood and we might get a decent player in who can score goals.
As we know Bielsa had 2 formations… switching to 5 at the back if the opposition played 2 up top. In my opinion it Usually fckd up our rhythm - if I’d been managing against us I’d have played 2 strikers for that purpose alone. Farke has 2 formations as well. An extra midfielder when he wants to keep it tighter. If you call throwing on the cavalry ‘a formation’ you could say he has 3 formations. I agree it’s a bit Sunday league but very neatly paid off against spurs. Some managers are much more flexible in their set ups. I see both arguments.,, if you have a system the players know well and you’re doing ok with it… do you have to change for the opposition? We can admire their tactical nous when it works but It’s not uncommon for managers to mix it up and mess up their own side’s game trying to outfox the opposition. More than one way to skin a cat I guess.
